Has anyone ever taken the time to check out some of the history in their local area?
I live near what used to be greenham airbase, in a few minutes searching I've found a secret slip road off the M4 leading to an airbase, evidence of a nuclear accident and loads more interesting stuff.
Do a search on your area and see what comes up, it's a great way to kill time

Henry Walton Smith, founder of a famous chain of newsagents/bookstores, was born in the town where i live....

a prominant member of the local tree presivation group was once tutor to Osama Bin Laden, and taught him to speak english...

I live 1/2 a mile from Poole Harbour the 2nd largest natural harbour in the world :D
A few miles a way in Swanage they invented Radio-waves which led to the making of 'microwaves' in the kitchen.
On Holton heath, near Wareham was one of the biggest chemical factories in britain. This place made 'Cordite'....quite an explosive element. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Navy_Cordite_Factory,_Holton_Heath

Poole was a major trading port with a lot of trade in Potatoes, Tobacco etc from Nova-scotia

Studland beach was used in practice for the Beach landings during WW2. Live rounds were used and people died as a result.

Purbeck stone was/is used in the Building of many Cathedrals due to it's workability and it lasting a lot longer.

We've also had Iron age man, Romans and Vikings

When we finally get our new Bridge built it will be the only place in the world where there are 2 fully working lifting bridges 100m apart...oh I can't wait

There's a village called axmouth that used to be one of the most important harbours in the country during the tudor times, which is now tiny.
Lyme regis is like, history central with the cobb and shizzle.
Ottery St Mary is the birth place of Samuel Taylor Colerdige (whoever he was) and has the famous tar barrells on bonfire night.
Exeter is pretty mad. Still has loads of roman buildings and stuff. And the house that moved (they actually moved a house, down a road).
