how do you fit a short shifter?

i dropped the exhaust down, removed the heat shield, removed the bolt from the bottom of excisting short shifter, removed the interior parts, removed gear knob, but couldnt get the short shifter out as the ball woudnt come out of the socket! can anyone explain how to get it out?
