Heating issues

I've started to have things get a wee bit warm under the bonnet of our 1994 1ltr Micra. Odd things to note are the radiator fan does not kick in automatically and the temperature gauge does not work either. I know these run off separate senders but find it odd nothing works?! I have fitted a manual override for the rad fan.

A couple of weeks ago I started to hear a knocking coming from around the water pump area - aprox 2 knocks per second on tick over. I have removed the water pump/impeller and found it to be virtually brand new, so refitted it, should I have replaced it? Or could the knocking be more serious? eeek!

Any ideas, criticisms welcome, I'm still learning....

could be body parts knoking on idle?
temp gauge sensor seems like its done,not to expensive to change,from nissan scrappys
you could change both sensors and see if that helps,,my fan wouldnt work until i changed them sensors
two wire one controls the fan i think
