Gearstick not centring - now fixed

Hi,

I have a Y-reg 1.0 which was my daughters first car, I am now looking after it and will shortly let my son use it to practice for his driving test.

It runs well, but it had the classic problem of 'gearstick not centring'. After reading the forums I thought it could be the spring, so I took it to garage 1 - they fitted a new spring, but still not centring - had to push across from2nd to 3rd or 5th to 4th etc. and led to me crunching the gears a few times. Garage 1 fitted a new spring and squirted some WD40 around, £50 and not much better.

Took it to garage 2 who are a bit further away but usually manage to do a good job fixing things (actually they fitted a new radiator to the micra about 3 years ago). They found a corroded ferrule through which a rod passes, which was causing enough friction to stop the stick centring. They cleaned it up and now the gearstick moves freely and centres just fine - £30 (£80 in total).

Regards,
John
