Gear Lever Not Centering - Spring Refitted - Still U/S !

Can anyone out there in the Mirca world offer any suggestions. I found the return spring had snapped - this was refitted but the gear lever still does not centralise.
The ball-like mechanism under the gear lever gaitor was liberally lubricated - still no joy.

maybe the knuckle joints are seized sally ?
is the spring under tension like this ?

Don't know - it's pouring with rain at the mo - will check it out when dry.

the joints at the ends of the gearchange rod tend to go dry/tight, making the gearchange stiff
