Clicking on full lock.

Hi, my girlfriends 1999 micra 1.0l has got a real clicking when pulling away round a corner or on full lock. I realise this is probably a CV joint. It had the boot replaced at the last MOT but obviously some crap has got in there because its groaning when driving and clicking.

I take it its definately the cv joint because I cant replicate the noise when the car is jacked up with the wheels off the ground. Turning the wheels makes no noises and I can only replicate it by bouncing the car up and down!

Is it an easy job to replace the cv joint? I have a haynes and it says remove the drive shaft which sounds scary as to me! Can you just remove the outer joint and refit? Will tracking be out once its done?

Any help would be great. Thanks.

is it an easy job? yes Can you remove just the outer joint? yes there is a good guide by sonic in the k11 blogs but you need to be an official member
 
i just brought a whole new drive shaft with cv joints and didnt a stright swap, got the drive shaft off ebay and problem solved
 
cant remember now as it was when i did my converson from 1l to 1.3. just got 1 from a scrappy, wasnt too much i dont think.

soz thought you bought one new i just wanted to compare price (i dont do used driveshafts anymore after bad experiences) broken cv joint ment driveshaft dug into road = one very broken ford escort (no real loss i guess)
 
It's false economy to buy something like a complete second hand driveshaft with CV joints though, you have no idea of the condition of either the shaft or joint, it could already be quite worn and be ready to start clicking away at any moment, its much better to buy new on something like this, I always use these www.driveshaftparts.co.uk for mine, always good service and pretty reasonable on price too.
 
Right! Well I have the article from sonic - cheers - and so I went out at lunch and bought a cv joint. I keep reading haynes and sonics guide and I'm convincing myself it should be straight forward. Heres hoping.

time to get messy at the weekend.
 
did mine yesterday easy job took me an hour and a half for one side thanks to sonic's guide (haynes manual over complicates an easy job)
 
I would add this to the end of sonics CV joint guide, but I only paid for trial membership because I am cheap! :glance: so thjought I would add it here in case anyone searches.

I changed the cv joint at the weekend. The job was very easy following the guide and it now doesn't make any clicking noises!

The only thing that caused a problem was that I bought a 30 mm socket as described in the guide. When I went to undo the drive shaft nut though, the nut that was on there was 28mm and the nut going back on the new joint was 32 mm!!!

Complete pain but I luckily had these sized sockets available, but it meant I wasted time and money buying a socket I didn't use. My fault for not checking before hand though.

ha ha mine was a 27mm lol
