Check fault codes? 2000 1.0

Hi

The engine light is on in my 2000 1.0 K11 and wonder if I can check the code without a OBDII instrument?

I actually have a cheap OBDII reader but it doesen't seem to respond at all when I plug in... fwn
The car seems to run fine, but I suspect the O2-sensor because it had a bit higher lambda readings at idle at it's last check up than usual (swedish MOT)... 1,03 allowed: (0,97-1,03)

you can self diagnose the ecu it will show if the lumbda is faulty it involves puting a connection between two points of the diagnostic plug i think its on this site somwhere if you search it
