Bent Conrod ...

I took my car to a mechanic after letting the problem sit for a while, the problem being a knocking noise from the bottom end of the motor.

It was dianosed as a bent conrod, with possible bearing damage. From my understading, water entered the cylinder, and as the piston went down to compress, the conrod, connecting the crankshaft to the piston, gave way under pressure as water does not compress; air/fuel does.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem ? i know theres no easy way to fix it, but has anyone any suggestions as to how much a rebuild of a micra motor would cost ?

No idea on actual costs, but just the removal and refitting of a motor and all that is attached to it would be around 10 hours labour or more, at $80+ an hour, never mind the cost of parts, i think you would be better off finding another engine from a wreckers ect and putting that in.

What does the head come off for in this situation? Is it that hydraulicing the engine is guaranteed to knacker the head gasket, or is there another reason?

you have to lift the piston and rod out RM, the engine can stay in tho :)

Obvious when you point it out; no chance of dropping it out the bottom without stripping the whole bottom end, for which the flywheel has to come off, for which the gearbox has to come off...

[edit] Had a look - pistons don't fit through the bottom end, the only way to pull them is to remove the head.
