Air con help please

Hi,
I'm new to the Micra but it seems to be a great car so far - few niggles as you always get buying a used motor.
I am trying to sort the air con out incase we ever get warmer weather. The light comes on when the button is pressed but there is no drop in revs to say the compressor has started to work.
Is there a number of checks I can do to see which part may be faulty? Does the compressor not work if the coolant stuff has leaked out?

Hi tobyd

It may be worth getting it checked for leaks/gassed (£50)
...but if there's not that initial drop in revs (mine makes a faint click sound when it kicks in too) then it may be the compressor/condenser as you say

if it then stops working after a few weeks it may well be the compressor/condenser Which is what's wrong with my mums 2003 1.4
...unfortunately the independent garages can't seem to get that part it
...so we've had to resort to getting it sorted by Nissan themselves,...gonna cost about £500 all in <_<

could be the relay that kicks it in is knackered?
