Hi all.

Looking to re-host our website (company) very shortly and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for good web hosting?

I've been shopping around on the net, but it's like a minefield!!

We will be looking for e-commence web hosting eventually, we would like telephone support, good server log reports and bandwidth levels. We are looking to get good exposure from the site and willing to pay what it takes.

Anyone had experience of linux or windows server's, I've looked at the differences and I'm still not sure which to choose.

Any suggestions fwn

This is who I'm currently thinking of going with

thanks
Kev :)

depends what langauge the msc pages are all in, if they are in ASP.NET or anything .net, then windows is the way to go, otherwise i think linux will do you nicely :)

looks like they are all php to me tho, so linux should be fine!

It's our family run business, not the MSC.

The site is done in php, so is linux the way to go then?

Kev

windows you probably found costs more, its becuase windows can run ASP.NET websites (which is the best language for writing websites at the minute). if your site is in PHP then you might aswell save yourself some money and go with linux, as there would be no difference at all!

also im using supanames (http://www.supanames.co.uk) so you can have a look at that if you like, im using it to host a website im doing for a family member - http://www.thevelveteenloveheart.co.uk

lol not completed yet, not my cuppa tea either, wedding stuff :/

I use this company:

http://www.routhost.com/

Very very reliable, never had any problems, good support for things like php and databases. Everything you need I think.

I also got it free :grinning: ... got in contact (via msn!) with the owner of the company and asked for free webhosting. And voila. Although I made it clear that I wasn't prepared to pay for it anywhere, he told me he "wasnt loosing anything" by giving me free hosting. :grinning:

*chuckle* i'll leave it at that :) ;)

If you're doing PHP sites, go with Linux, PHP will run on Windows, but has lots of little foibles that go with it.

1&1 are good for starting out, also I use http://www.uh-hosting.co.uk on some smaller traffic sites :)

James.

sorry missed the all important IMO off that post

but it is the most expensive to host ;) and thats what windows hosting is for

Avoid 1&1, I wouldnt use them if somone held a gun to my head.. Kev, how much bandwidth do you need? If its not vast then I can offer you hosting.

Ed

I would highly recommend www.hartserver.net I am with them for my forum and have never had any major issue with them. The only time I needed them to fix\change something it was done within minutes.
