Does anyone no the deal with neons are they illegal or not? Have been told by loads of ppl that they are ok if the car is stood still but what about drivin with them on. Got told on saturday that u can drive with them on as long as they are not red at front or white at back of car?
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Also, does anyone no a good place to get a set

Hi,

Personally I HATE neons with a passion! They are a tacky 'Mod' but that's just my opinion.

I would think that you should be able to drive with them on, as you said... as long as they aren't red or white....

cant say that i h8 them, think they look really good on some cars n wen theyr styled properly. interior ones are smart especially in and around an install

they are legal if you are stationary but you cant drive with them on.
the best place to put them is back on the shelf but thats just my opinion

Actually all of this is wrong. There is no mention of neons in the construction and use regulations which relate to cars. The only thin that is mentioned is colours.

Technically, if you CANNOT see the light directly only a reflection then anything goes, typically though police dont know this. If the tubes/bulbs are visible then no blue is allowed no red from the front no white from the back etc though you could have them amber :)

Undercar Neons: Are they legal?

Unfortunately, this is not a simple question to answer. In theory, they are legal providing that you follow these rules.

You MUST NOT be able to see the actual tubes. As long as all you can see is the GLOW then in theory they are not causing a problem. Of couse we recommend that if you have them fitted you have a switch to turn them on and off.

They must not cause a distraction to yourself or other road users. To be honest if they're turned on it could be said that you're distracting other drivers, it all depends on who is dealing with the matter.

If you are stopped by the police, be courteous and polite. If you are asked to switch off the neons we suggest that you do so or they could issue you with an order to remove them.

from the website for young drivers.
ive also heard of the colour rules. blue is a definite no no. red rear and white frontal were also mentioned

Said this before about my mate being a copper, he doesn't know offically what the position is but he has mates who have 0 tolerence and he would say turn them off just to be ssn to be doing his job (his car has neons inside)

Blue is emergency colour so try keep away from having them look like police style lights

i have just bought a set from halfords a snatch at £50 if anyone else is interested in purchasing some.

anyway the box clearly states that

1.this light must not be visible to other road users

2. for off road use only

3. not legal for use on public highways

hope thats helped

you can have them on if you are not on a public road.

but you can have them on if you have white and the front, orange at the sides and red at the back.

it's the same with any lights on your car. they must be red at the back, white on the front and orange at the side. but you can have blue at the front because cops don't know the difference between blue lights and zenons.

also the law is not clear on washer lights at the mo so it's ok to have washerlights of any colour.

i've done my research cos my car is like a mobile christmas tree

most of my lights can change colour to be legal and then be red to match the car colour :)

?????

what do you mean? as far as i know they are legal for now but the law is looking into them so they may later become illigal.

or are you not a fan of washer lights ;)

haha fair enough,

i myself, don't really mind looking like a christmas tree

I make some EXCELLENT footwell lighting kits. I would say the BEST atually lol. I am openminded to lights of any kind really, each to their own, however what I did say about the legality of them above is at this time still fact - regardless to what others say to cover their backs.

make??

is that LED or Neon?

i modded some halfords £18-a-go lights so they fitted without being seen :)

i have blue LED washer jets and i was told to get rid of them before. So what i do is pull out the wire at the back of the switch so even if its spotted i can say that i was told to disconnect them, thats the switch but its not connected, and that i wire them up for shows.... worked for me so far!

ive heard about them netto ones lol,

£25 is that for 1 side of the car or both?,
my knowledge on LEDS isnt high, where do they get the power from? and are they hard to set up?

cool, i was talking about Eds, but that does seem cheep, not gonna get any thought, would look tacky on a civic on wheel trims lol, although im gonna get some Rota alloys wheels, theres a new design 15" that weights less than 12 pounds, didnt see the price on them though

preferably the headlight supply because thats the only time you really need them on

all my lights are on switches, i can clame that the switch must have got knocked while i was driving or i've just come from a show and forgot to turn them off

as for your in car neons dont buy the ones from halfrauds or that, go into a computer shop an buy computer ones as they are cheaper, computers run off a 12v supply so the lights can be modded for a car, its a project im setting about doing, ill post some pics up when its done!!

As for washer LED, i think they should be banned but undercar neons can look smart. Cant say that iv ever seen a micra with them on tho, has anyone tried it??

yea i got them.....

i like them but it's all a matter of personal taste.

Lights on micras seems to be quite controversial here......

I personally think they do look tacky on midifed cars, but they can be pulled off on modified supras skylines etc. but on a micra i wouldnt go for undercar ones. Jus interior ones :)

this isn't my car but here you go. these are LEDs so they are a little more direct rather than a glow.

here is a pic of my neon tubes which i prefer because they give a nice even glow.

i don't have a proper pic but that's kinda what they look like :)

RE: RE: Undercar Neons, whats the deal?

Yeah i have to agree, prefer the neon to LED's.

Am not to sure on interior ones altho urs do look smart G. You gettin anymore installed, around ur ice maybe?

if you can see in the smallest pic, i have intereor neons too, those ones are LED and i think LEDs are best inside because equilvent neons are alot dimmer.

those are hellfords ones, they do different patterns as well, for ultra tackyness. hehe i keep them on standard on.

I reckon you can only get away with them on highly modified cars or performance cars. ie. supra, skyline, as they only work when you have a nice glow around the whole of the car, and therefore this means not been able to see the neon sticks, so skirts and big bumpers tend to suit them better and give a nicer glow. On some cars though they just look stupid.

i think it depends on whether the owner wanted to do a good job or not.

i think they look better on small cars like golfs etc because on bigger cars, the neons are too short to light the whole thing.

anyway tonight i'm gonna put on arch lighting as well so i'll see how that looks.

i was behind a crap escort during the day time and i still knew thay had neons because i could see the cables dragging on the floor behind them HA!
