Springs and Struts

A few days ago I bought a pair of springs and struts at the scrap yard to fool around with. When I removed one and set it on the ground, hydraulic oil leaked from the hole on the side of the strut(!). So, my question is (no such thing as a stupid question, just another way to learn something), why? I would have thought that the hydraulic reservoir would have been self contained. And, if it leaks out, can it be put back in, or refreshed, to recondition the strut?

The scrappy near me drills holes through all the shocks for some reason, maybe they've done the same for yours! It definitly shouldn't leak

Shame on me, should have thought of them being drilled for the fluid. I knew they were supposed to do that. Had another look and could see where the drill bit hit the inside. Holes drilled in different places, also. Thanks for the replys.
