overheating in trafic grrrrrrrrr

so i was on my way to work this morning and got stuck in traffic and my 2000 micra decided to start overheating because the fan is not kicking in like it should.
my first thought was the thermostat, but i would expect the car to overheat when not in traffic also. am i right in thinking this and just aim my efforts at fuses and relays or do you think its worth changing the thermostat
any help would be greatly appreciated

Thermostat will be fine if moving as radiator can cool coolant with air flow but sat still as a temporary solution turn heating hot air setting on full so it draws heat from the matrix

I thought as much do a electrical fault thinking about it I'm hoping its not too serious I smelt burning the other day and dismissed it as the clutch as that's shagged to I think

Check rad cap condition?
check for loose pipe or pinhole letting air in?
