Time of in lieu vs payment

Well the story goes...was approach by management today reguarding the option of taking time of in lieu or payment for my overtime. For all my working career i have always taken payment for overtime never know the other option exist. Can someone with more knowledge in this please give me some advice as to which option is better

if you take time in lieu then you wont be taxed as much. thats what i gather. i always take time in lieu after i work more than 50 hours.
well thats just my 2 cents.
