Main fusible link

The main (ie the one on top) fusible link on my wife's car has blown. The RAC man noted that it seemed to have blown before and had been soldered up. He bridged the connection temporarily and we got home OK. Since this is now an unfused connection I want to replace the unit, but am confused by the fact that the one fitted had an 80 amp rating which I can obtain easily, but the Haynes manual says it should be 250 amp (these seem impossible to find). To be honest, 250 amps seems rather excessive, but I don't want to fit the version I can get only for it to blow again, possibly in more difficult circumstances. Any advice gratefully received.
