K12 spluttering with smokey engine.

My wife went out shopping last night and came home in a panic saying the car was sick. Symptoms included - after leaving it for a while to cool - spluttering engine even though the rev idled at a constant, smokey engine around manifold and engine management light either staying on or flashing. Does anybody have any ideas? Cheers in advance

Could be so many things, first stop is to get it read for a fault code.

With mechanic now but I will probably end up going to a guy I know who has the software to read the cars ECU. Will let you know how it goes.
