K12 Fuel pump - Car would not start -which brands?

My K12 petrol cut out whilst driving - turned over but would not start. Sprayed some cold start in the air filter and the engine caught - so knew it was fuel supply issue. Mechanic came and whacked the fuel tank with big metal rod and - hey presto car started fine. So apparently its the fuel pump on its way out.
I have seen that I can get at this through the back seat, not sure about the special tool to turn it to open - but the rest seems a DIY job.
Couple of questions 1) is there a way of opening the top of the fuel tank without the specialised tool - eg 3 jaw oil filter removal tool?
2) Which brands are OK -Bosch £300 Starline £200 Ebay Lucas £100 Goodness knows what a Nissan part costs - and I guess a second hand one is just asking for a repeat- although this is the £50 option....
Any thoughts folks? - Thanks in advance.

Don't bother with second hand pumps, you might get one which also has problem, As for the special tool I am sure somewhere out there you can get it.. I've never done the job although have seen it done.. I'm not going to recommend any other way removing this locking ring as your dealing with a very explosive substance.. If you do remove it make sure the battery is disconnected and make sure if removing this ring nothing is likely to spark or metal against metal catch.
Sure there will be some YouTube vids out there on this either that or get a garage to replace it.
Take Care!

Thanks for your input. The garage quoted me £350 for parts and labour which seems quite reasonable. I do like doing things to the car so not sure if I'm going to have a bash yet - will try to see if the cost and playing with petrol risk is worth it. It looks a doddle on one video on youtube - famous last words....Its only failed/stopped once and its low mileage for a 2007 car - but its prob not worth the risk failing on the motorway.

It probably is a doddle to do it and no disrespect to you but there are people out there, who might just go and blow themselves up, petrol vapour and such like especially messing around with the petrol tank.. I would not like to be responsible in someone killing themselves or somebody else in the process.
I recall my own father was replacing a sender and pump unit On a Jaguar and that thing nearly went, he was very, very lucky! :(
Be safe!
