Intermittant engine problem?

We've just bought a 1994 (L Reg) K11, 1.3 LX for my daughter to learn to drive in. Most of the time it's fine, in fact it's great for £500!

However, now and again the engine feels very lumpy when driving and it dies every time you put your foot on the clutch to change gear (batt light come on, starts again when clutch is lifted) or to stop at a junction (dies completely), and it then takes 3 or 4 attempts to start (usually it fires up first time). This can happen for a whole day, then it will be fine for another week!

If it helps, you can usually tell when it's going to happen as when you start it in the morning, the revs seem very high when the engine is cold.

Any ideas?
