is that the ABS slamming the breaks on/off?

No. thats flex in the transmission/chassis/suspension. Basically it bends gets to a point it cant bend any more then the wheel skids this eases the load then it starts taking it up again. This extreme loading cycle stresses everything and ultimately causes the failure of the whole axle for it to then fall off!
