My 1.0 will hit 80 on the speedo before hitting the rev limiter, and again 55 in second.

Thanks, it sounds very simple! By the loom, do you mean somewhere behin the socket there should be a plug? I have had the fascia off tonight and fitted a new stereo but I never saw one there.
