Thoughts on wide angle mirrors?

Just wondered on peoples thoughts using these, I'm reffering to the type with a split plain and a dotted line about 3/4 across and convex on the outer edge. I've picked up one from the breakers but finding it really disorientating to look in at times as my eye naturally goes to the point where the two panes meet and I have to keep closing one eye for it not to distort. Perhaps it doesn't help that I have astigmatism (for the record I do wear contact lenses or glasses to drive).
Are they essential to you or made up for correct mirror adjustment in the first place? I do a quick shoulder check for changing lanes, joining carriageways etc.

It's never been an issue for me I can't say as I've ever really noticed enough of a difference from one car to the next (my golf is old enough that legally it doesn't need two mirrors, wifes is modern and has this and Dot has it). I don't remember ever getting used to it, but I guess I must have done some time ago.
