General queries from Jap Novice!

Hey guys & girls...

I'm wondering a few things about my Micra.

Firstly, in my Haynes Manual, it mentions a flap that you have to open/close depending on temperature. Is this right? If so, where is it and what do I do with it?

Secondly, my idle speed seems rather odd. I think it's been set too low, it's idling better now I've fitted a new fuel filter (It was barely running at all before!) but sometimes, not all the time, it stalls when you dip the clutch to pull into a junction etc. However, if I turn on the side lights, it works perfectly. Lights on, the engine speed increases to what I'd imagine as about 1000rpm or so and it runs like a dream. Any ideas?

Thirdly, if I'm indicating, either left or right, then apply the brakes, the indicator appears to "Skip" a flash initially and flash a tiny bit faster. In my experience of an old Escort van, I was expecting disco lights on the rear end, but no, I got a friend of mine to hit the brakes and indicate and do all sorts with the rear lights and nothing. Not even any dimming. Normally it's a blown bulb or something, but no blown bulbs on it at all.

Stu.

first one, the flap is on the end of the trumpet on the air pan, it diverts the incoming air either from fresh air (cold for summer) or warm air from around the exhaust manifold, (warm air to warm the engine up quicker in cold weather), not really necessary here, just leave it in the summer position.

secont one, is it low all the time, just adjust the idle speed up a bit, if you follow the throttle cable to the carb, the leaver that it operates there will be a screw to adjust how far back the lever goes, the haynes will show you where it is, clockwise for up, anticlockwise for down. when you turn the lights on, or the rear window heater or the blower or the rad fan the engine pucks up its revs slightly, theres a little box under the passanger seat that controls this, its to stop the engine stalling when a high electrical load is placed on the engine.

third one, not got a clue really, never noticed it on mine, perhaps a bad earth somewhere try cleaning the battery terminals up and put some vasaline on them, also check the black wire to car body connection at the back of the battery, this can go bad.
