erratic speedo

Hi
i am having this problem with my micra

the speedo is erratic

some time it reads normanl
some time, say the car is travaling at 50km/h, the speedo reads 100km/h (doubles the actual speed)
some time triples?

some how there is a factor to the speedo reading.

the speedo needel moves smoothly, no jumping or skipping.

what could cause this problem??

do you guys think its a problem related to speedo cable or the cluster it self?

it would be the cluster imo, dont they use 2 spinning discs close together ? (1 magnetic one) there may be a foreign object between them ?

Had same problem.

Its the graphite grease that they use on the gears and mechanism of the speedo. Basically you strip the unit to bits, wash all the grease off with metho and re-apply some new graphite grease. I use chrome molly brand grease. Available through electronics wholesalers.

The old grease gets sticky when it gets old, however this may not be a job you want to tackle yourself. I would recomend pulling out the instrument cluster and taking it to a instrumentation technician.

the dial is easy to remove, stripping it might be a different story tho, it,s more of a drum and cup eh (not 2 discs)
