Competed in another sprint on Sunday and went well - improved my time from 133.00 to 129.93 sec.

I can attribute this to my new D2 coilovers improving cornering mainly by reducing front roll (see before and after shot below) and a bit more power with the new exhaust manifold. Video at

Unfortunately they moved me to the open class (??) so didn't score a podium. I've protested this as I'm now up against roll caged 2 litre Cosworth powered Escorts and Lotus Elises. May as well destroke it to 1 litre and turbo it! Only joking!

I have the track setup which is firm but actually not too bad if set on the softer setting. I could easily drive it on the street as long as I took it easy on speed humps etc. The rear spring is softer than supplied with the Whiteline kit though the front is twice the rate (see Yom's post on the matter). Only problem I had with the D2's was I found it impossible to lower the rears much below stock. The current setup was achieved by moving the shock mount by 8cm! I've had a chat to D2 Australia and they say they supplied the right rear shock but it can't be shortened less than the Konis already on the car. They are going to supply a shorter one to me soon.

D2's have had reliabilty problems from people I've spoken too but not many options for the little Micra and so far pretty happy.

"G4's and D2's are identical I believe? Just different colour.

No I don't think they are.
For one the spring rates are completely different for the Micra against what is given for the D2's.

The Whiteline/Koni setup is great till you go fast or hard enough to exceed its limits then it becomes a bit sloppy and soft. Moderate corner speeds on a bumpy surface would be its forte. A great package for a sporty road-focused car.

Smooth bitumen with high G forces and the increased stiffness of the D2's etc shines.

The advantage of coilovers is the ability to tune your ride height/spring preload/and bump/rebound rate to your needs that gives them the edge over strut inserts etc. They do usually mean a shorter stroke so are less able to absorb big bumps (unless go to rally spec ones). And it's not that hard to get springs with different rates if you want further tuning options.

That would be great guys. MaxAction motorkhanas events held at the Belmont Park racecourse carpark are the best to enter. Just need:
1. A sound car - battery fixed properly, reasonable tyres, registered
2. Car club membership with a CAMS affiliated club
3. CAMS level 2 licence - can get a day licence from organisers or go for a 12 month licence

They have not been held over winter but are starting up again on Sunday 14 October but I'm away for that one but will try to enter the next one or possibly the MaxAttack event on the 28th. Details are at http://www.driveline.net.au/eventDetailsb.php?event_id=611
Keep in touch if you want to meet at an event.

I might enter the Micra in a hill climb at Jack's Hill at Wanneroo (part of the AMR Speed Event Series)coming up the 21 October as well as my 200SX. That one should be fun.

The cars have to be road registered? Is that so that they've definitely had their RWC? I thought scruitineering would take care of most of that. Sounds a bit wierd as a lot of people do have dedicated track cars and for obvious reasons wouldn't register them.

What car club are you a part of?

Depends on the type of event whether the cars have to be road registered. There is a requirement - whether by CAMS or insurance companies - for cars to be registered at certain events. A couple of the motorkhanas are run on public carparks so that may come into the equation. The cars generally still require scrutineering regardless.

Most of the events are not run by car clubs but by privately run organisations. Car clubs may be involved in time keeping and marshalling though. The exception is the Speed Event Series which is a time-attack type event series run by the WA sporting car club (which I'm a member of and which runs the Barbagallo Raceway at Wanneroo) and affiliated clubs. They all must have CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motorsport) approval for the venue and the events they hold. The Speed Event Series will allow non-road registered cars to compete but most other events require it.

Maybe I should bolt my dad's old CAMS badge on the back of the car and see if i'd get away with it! It's only about 40 years old.. Haha...

The registration makes sense if it's taking place in a public carpark though. I haven't actually attended a motokhana before but DECA run them bianually or possibly 3 times a year down here in VIC. Aaron (evade) has attended several I think.
