Should have mentioned, i tried the 2 pin idea on the diagnostic plug and when i bridged the two lower left pins nothing happened. Pretty sure i couldnt have got it wrong so no idea why i never managed to get any flashing lights on the dash.

Sounds like a combination of problems. Try replacing the fuel pump and O2 sensor.
