A simple way of determining whether your MAF sensor is at fault is to unplug the sensor (with the engine turned off and the key out of the ignition) then go for a drive. If the flatness/hesitation has disappeared then you have isolated the fault to the MAF sensor*

Yes this is 2000-2002 coilpack; the >2000 TB is not similar to this unit. The actual sensor has been removed from the small section of inlet tract it usually lives in and has been installed in the stock location.

Been kicking the issue around on PM for a while with Frank so credit his way for information/thoughts. I had the 'usual' MAF issue (2000 onwards coilpack 1.0) and had tried an eBay pattern MAF which lasted for about 500 miles. The hesitation came back but I was still getting 45+ MPG so...
