The big problem here is that it only happens at 3500RPM under load – not while idling – so recording the sound or listen through a pole is going to be difficult – 3500RPM in 5th is around 140KPH!

I’ve eliminated all other noises (lots from the exhaust shielding!) leaving just this one. No other issues through the cabin, steering or pedals.
My 1999 1.3 SI as developed a strange engine noise at 3500 RPM. Under load and in any gear at 3500RPM the engine produces a “war, war, war†sound. Going beyond 3500RPM the noise stops. Idling at 3500RPM does not produce the sound.
