Properly sealing the oil pan

Hey folks, I have some questions about sealing the oil pan.
First of all, I've replaced my rusty and old oil pan back in december. I used something called EasyGasket by Innotec on the sealing surface and since I didn't know any better, I've also put this DIY-gasket around the old half moons, pretty much covered them. At first, everything was nice and dry, but it started leaking rather strong about one or two months ago. This time around, I've ordered Elring Dirko and some new halfmoons. But I couldn't really get any clue about how to properly get everything sealed. Some say that the halfmoons should be completely free of the gasket stuff, some say the edges that sit on the flat side of the oil pan should be slighty covered. So what is it all about? Not looking forward to removing it a third time, so I want to get it done properly this time. How did you guys get it nice and dry for good?

Just noticed that I've posted this into the wrong section. If someone could move this thread to the Mechanical Servicing section, that would be great!
