Thanks folks, but I was stubborn about keeping original a pillar position. A couple of evenings with a hacksaw, file and superglue did the trick! Sounding good :D

Just replacing the stock speakers with some alpine components. The doors were a swift enough job - but the tweeters... The alpine ones are bigger then the stock ones so I have attacked the plastic mounting bracket with a hacksaw and a stanley knife... There is almost bugger all left and...
Managed to get a stock shelf with speakers for £20. Havent got it yet but plan is to use as it comes till funds allow, then use as a base to upgrade... Full plan and pics to follow :)

Last time I installed a head unit in a k11 it lost time, stations etc whenever I turned it off so I reckon I did something wrong in the wiring...

I have a new Alpine head unit for my '96 K11. Any idea how I can find out what wiring adaptor I need so I have all the bits ready before I start fitting..?

Not sure that applies if the money was spent on petrol collecting the item... Looking for how to get the best sound - the speakers will most likely be alpine, but how to fit - standard shelf, wait for an OEM speaker shelf, or go mdf... thoughts?

Going to sort out a new head unit later this month and have found what I presume are the connectors for rear speakers after following directions in another thread... now decision time:
1. Put some Alpine 6X9s into the parcel shelf, possibly with some dynamat as the shelf seems a little...
Couple more tries - any thoughts..? If you know these were standard on a particular type or model it may help the search...
They look like standard nissan micra alloys to me - but seem to have foxed the parts desk...
