throttle body housing?- loss of power, warning lights on

I have a Y reg Micra 1.0 S 2001. The engine warning light came on and stayed on for a few days, then when driving I lost all power to the engnie, allowing me to go at just under 30 mph max speed.
I had a mechanic look at the car and said that it was the throttle body housing and that it was going to cost £250 second hand plus fitting or at least £400 new plus fitting. I am no mechanic but that seems a little steep to me. can anybody offer me any suggestions as to wether this is the most likely cause and if so where i can get the part a little more reasonably priced. thank you

sounds like the usual maf problem marianne, if you disconnect it the car usually runs ok but thirsty, and the ebay maf,s are £30 iirc
