Am i correct in assuming that the stud closest to the starter motor is the positive?

There should be a big connection (a stud with a nut) which is your main battery feed. Then there should be a little connection (either a spade connector or a little stud) which is your ignition feed (when you turn the key)

The earth for the startermotor is the engine itself. This is why we need to check that the earth strap is in good condition.

I have 2 studs and a blade connector, so are you saying that only one of the studs should be positive and the other not used?

A pic would help but if there are 2 studs, 1 is for the main battery lead and the other is the exit out of the solenoid. There should be a braided bit of wire which is bolted to it that goes into the starter motor.
