The ignition coil to my engine bay lead has pretty much melted all the way through. The car seemed to be running ok but i opened up the engine bay with it running to be greeted with an exposed lead which was sparking away - melting the lead as i watched.

Has anyone any ideas why this may have happened? The lead has been in the car around 18 months (due a change im sure) so i've just bought a replacement set, but am worried it will happen again.

Thinking about it, it looks to me like the lead was pulled slightly out of the coil (i.e. the end of the lead was not properly in the coil conection, so it may have just been a very wierd HV breakdown of the rubber (that is what it looks like). Has it gone all cabon like? That was causes by the energy from the spark. Make sure the lead is in properly and it wont happen again.
