Whine noise from engine bay when cold

My Micra 2005 K12 1.4 SE has developed a whine noise on cold startup, continues for a few minutes until the car has warmed up. The noise gets louder as revs increases. My first thought was a bearing on the alternator but wondering if it could be anything else?

Allow wife/girlfriend to sit inside the cabin instead of in the engine bay on cold days?

More than likely the aux belt (or similar) - mine does the same when cold and as far as i've been told its nothing to worry about.
