Pressed as frank says, I know people do but they should never really be hammered in as it can cause premature failure, it ever caused you any problem frank?

yes, its not advised to hit the inner race, but fine to hit a big socket that only contacts the outer race.
and i repaired many right-offs in the 80,s/90,s, and i found that wheel bearings would often fail a few weeks after being hit/kerbed in an accident
