A new gearknob for my car, got the sparco one on there at the moment but I thought this has a bit more character as I made it.
Was thinking of anodizing it of powder coating it but not sure?

yer if i can get on the cnc lathe i might make a couple more. if i do a design on the computer the lathe will make it for me in about 5 mins :D

not sure yet probably around a tenner maybe a bit less, depends if i can get to making another 1 or 2 next practical session.

What lasts longer anodized or powder coating?

I would love one of those. Let us know if you manage to make some to sell :D

no reason if they both shouldn't last forever really. especially being inside the vehicle in a non-hostile environment.

Will do :grinning:

powder coating will last longer. anodising wears off. look at any red anodised equipment and it soon goes pink..

Nice!!

I wish i could make somthing that nice.

All i made in college was these

Those are what i have made in college.

I have also made the clamp holding them together :D

Im now making a pipe cutter :D

I know i have just hijacked your thread but thought i would share my work

Oh and for those that dont know what they are they are spring compressors!!

CHEERS

lol i made some canards for the k11 at collage ;) got them in my shed now painted matt black, need to take some pics :p

excellent work guys, I work for an aerospace company and we produce some parts like that gearknob, and i have to say thats very good work indeed.

Red will suit your car well

anodized would be better and last longer if its done right.

Thanks, I love machining things feels really good when you do it right and it comes out so well!

Woah! I am SUPER impressed. I once made a 5cm-long key fob at school. Oh, and a block with holes in it for pencils. Working with my hands ain't really my thing

Anodised looks really cool but as Antony points out, you do often see rather pink-looking things!

Seriously though. If you made an anodised pink one, I'd totally buy it for my car. W00t!

Very good work there peeps! The Gearknob would look good Anodised imo.. :) it would also look very nice with the Console i've just done...*drool*

I like the Spring compressors as well, chunky but solid (Y)

corker knob!!!

(LOL)

Anodeizing is only poor if it is done using an extreemly low budget high volume basis.

fot the likes of a one off (or even a hundred-off) the durabilliy and finish will be superior to powder coating IMO...

insist on pukker dyes, electrolytes and decent process times and your knob will last a lifetime with no noticable deterioration

(lol...<implied puns>)

i wouldn't mind one if you can do me one =] or two actually.

Although, a suggestion of mine would be, shorten teh bit stciking out of the bottom, and make the last bit (say the very bottom 3mm) stick out wider than the rest, and put teh grub screws in the protruing bit, that way anyone with a non-standard gear gaitor (like me in a bit) will be able to attach it properly so it looks like a proper stock job, and it'll cover the screws =]

I'll make an image of what i mean if you want. i know what i mean ;)

already done that to it, put 3 grub screws in the end and the gaitor pulls over them. I put a long stick on it so that the gaitor would go over it.
