Timing chain worries looking at car today

Hi chaps I'm just about to go and see a micra but have heard stories about timing chain issues, what are the tell tail signs? Also what is the normal replacement schedule? Is it game over if it snaps?

Thanks for any help, going to look at the car in a couple of hours!

Ps: any other things to look out for would be great too :)

hi japtastic, it,s supposed to mainly affect the early k12,s, and i think the only signs are mil light showing (because the cam sensor is out of sync with the crank sensor) and stalling, and the only way to check is to measure the chain tensioner throw :)

Hi guys.....

I'm having the MIL problem at the moment and when checked the code it is the cam shaft sensor, but my car is running ok and not stalling, so am hopeful that its not the timing chain. And will hopefuly get away with just getting the sensor changed, any ideas??

Cheers

you may have done what i did..

my top chain tensioner went squiffy and the top chain jumped a tooth on the inlet cam stopping the engine rather quickly.

however there was no damage to the engine. i changed the top chain, tensioner, cylinder head and cams and stuff and i have been driving it ever since (at 7000rpm)
