Starting issues

I have a 1990 Micra which has an annoying intermittent problem. Sometimes when i start it hot or cold the starter doesnt seem to turn the engine. i replaced the starter motor complete but it still does it. you get a noise or the starter working but no engine. If i then start it in gear it will allow me to try again and it will start properly. Any ideas?

An update. Now the car only seems to start with it in reverse gear and clutch pedal depressed. Can anyone suggest a reason for this, i suspect its the clutch can someone confirm this before i get my spanners out.
