Sr20 swap, Almera gti, k10 micra build

I Bought my K10 two years ago as a cheap run around, as I didnt want to use my s2000 or 350z in the winter time. It's a 1989 Ls model, garaged all its life, one previous owner and only 60k on the clock.

I fell in love with it straight away and decided it needed a little embellishment.

So, Here's some of the work thats happened so far.

Bought myself some alley cat 13x7 -7 offset. I couldnt find them in 4x100pcd stud fitment. So i had to resort to buying 4x101.6 pcd and using wobble nuts or floating nuts to account for the slighty different stud patteren.

It took me two days to fit these arches. I shaped them from fibreglass and used tiger bond to fit them.

I had previously searched the internet for examples of wide arch Micras. But all I found was bolt on extenders. So, with know one having done what I was looking for. I was keen to try something a bit different.

The look I was trying to achieve was the OEM Factory look with a tiny bit more aggression. But ultimately i needed to do this for wheel clearance. So that was my primary concern.

In the end I think I totally pulled it off. I managed to achieve the desired look. To my knowledge mine is the first of its kind, a total one off wide arch k10 micra. Couldn't be happier with the results.

So, it was at this point along the build I decided I wanted more power and purchased a 5 door 1.2 automatic K10 with the intentions of swapping the engines.

I was going to swap the engine and upgrade the carbs inlet/out manifold. Port and Polish the head with 3 way cut valves. Lightened flywheel etc etc etc

But after totalling up the costs, I thought, I might as well do an sr20de converstion

So that is exactly what i decided to do. I bought this almera gti for £700 with only 70k on the clock!

I then went to "Zidan Motorsport Custom & Performance" to get the converstion done.

I chose Zidan because he is a great mechanic and being an old friend ment that I could help out with the swap in the beginning.

Here we are lowering the car down on to the engine ready for mounting.

This is the engine fully bolted in on its freshly welded and painted up engine mounts.

The transplant was going well and looking good.

The first of many problems I encountered was the Almera brakes were too big to fit inside the tiny 13" alloy wheels.

But I stumbled across some 14x8 et20 bordet T's which were perfect for the job...

Thought I'd save some money and colour code my bumpers myself. Turned out to be more expensive then I had anticipated for the correct paints.

You need to apply epoxy first so the primer has somthing to stick too. Then prime, Base coat and lacquer if required.

My latest purchase is some brand new coilovers from "furyautoworx"

Luckily i only live 20 mintues from furyautoworx (louth). So i was able to pop in store to buy the parts.

I was quite impressed as these coilovers come pre-fabricated. So they just bolt straight on the k10 micra without too much hassle.

Also, whilst i was in store i had a chat with them about turbocharging my engine. I liked what they told me. So, Ive decided to let them turbo my car once the build is complete.

Exciting stuff!

This means my k10 should be running about 250 - 300bhp and weigh around 800kg by the time i'm finished.

I'll keep you guys posted...

Ordered myself some taylor made grey matts to stick with my primarily grey interior.

Also ordered my sound system. Including a 12" subwoofer, four 6x9" speakers, amplifier and a head unit.

So, my last update on the build was in April. It has taken six months to finally resolve the ecu problem.

The ecu from my 1997 almera gti donor car was locked (immobilized). We tried everything to make it work with no results.

Next step was a stand alone ecu. Seen as though I'm turbocharging the micra I needed to go down this route eventually anyway.

A local tuner said he could build me a stand alone from parts he can order from America. I agreed to his proposal, only to find out that he had no f*cking idea what he was doing!

By this point my local tuner "maptech" had wasted 4 months of my time. I was unhappy to say the least.

Next I decided to do it properly. I rang round a few places only to discover a standalone ecu was not going to be cheap. I was getting quotes averaging £1500-2500 including fitment and tuning. That was until I discovered...

" fusion motorsport "

This is were it all started to get better.

At fusion motorsport I was advised on buying a second hand pulsar gtir ecu £50 on eBay. Then fitting a nistune chip to the ecu, so then it may be reprogrammed.

So that is exactly what I did. I sent a second hand pulsar ecu to fusion motorsport about seven weeks ago. Then last week it was delivered back to me with the nistune board installed, flash mapped for my engine and pins altered on the ecu to fit my almera loom.

All that was achieved for £450 including ecu purchase.

Today was the first test drive in my Micra after completeing various jobs and fitting the ecu. The aim here was literally just testing everything on the car to make sure it all performed as it should.

But documented in the following photos is actually where we broke down.

Luckily we was not far from home. We soon got towed back to the garage and discovered that my custom built drive shafts had snapped on one side at the weld.

It turns out that all is not bad news, as the rest of the car worked well. My broken drive shaft can be reassembled and re-welded, then she will be practically road worthy.

Plus i saw a great photo opportunity and managed to get some decent snaps of the micra beast.

Here is some progress with the body. I was going to tackle this myself. But after some consideration, I decided to let "rust 2 riches" do this job. They will do a far better job than I would have done.

Thought I would seize this opportunity at the bodyshop. I fitted some new drilled/grooved discs and some EBC yellow stuff pads whilst it was on axel stands.

Also tweaked the ride height a little, As it was far too low at the front.

Today I have once again handed over my Micra, so that more work can be carried out...

This time it is Fury Autoworx. They are about to begin turbocharging my sr20de engine.

All turbo parts have already been purchased so that work can commence immediately. We are hoping to have the job done within a fortnight. Assuming everything goes to plan!

Sutton-Wheeler-Dealer ;
yes I'll be finishing this blog with all the facts and figures, Power runs etc.

Mad the Mike ;
I've got no plans for an lsd. This is because of all the money this thing has swallowed.
If I feel like it needs one when it's built, then I will probsbly go down that road eventually.

Here is what the engine swap is costing me so far EXCLUDING purchace of my Micra, spraying the bumpers, fitting the sound system, new car Matts, hid bulbs, fog lights, fury seats and splitter etc. they are NOT ESSENTIAL to the build, So will leave those bits out.

A Donor car almera gti £700. had to source another used gearbox £150. Labour to fit the sr20de £2300. New Ecu £450. X2 Custom shafts and new c.v. joints £880. Coilovers £350. New radiator £150. New wheels and tyres £550. Wheel arches materials £60. Strut brace £25. New battery £60. body shop £680. Reinforcements and wideband £1280. Three inch exhaust £350.

So that is a grand TOTAL of £7985.

Next will be the turbo and a remap, that will set me back around £1300 on top of grand total.

Thankfull making this detailed blog of the build has kept me going. Well worth doing for anyone thinking about going on such a journey. I never thought I would spend this much and it would take this long to build. If I new this i don't think i would have started this project. It will only ever be a toy. But I love it and wouldn't ever part with my micra. I am very pleased with its evolution, going from a basic 1.0L to the car it is today. It boasts big turbo power, classic 80s retro Japanese styling, its dripping with one off custom work, a power to weight ratio that can match any sports cars of today's standards and turns heads where ever It goes. But to top it all off it's still very functional with bright lights, an amazing sound system, sunroof and comfortable seats. It really is my dream hot-hatch.
