Replacement Key - Programming cost

Hi,

I'm new here but my sister has a used Micra 1.2 S (2003) that came with only one key and given this car appears to have one of the most retarded locking systems i've ever come across, she would obviously like a spare in the event the battery dies, or she loses the key.

The problem of course being cost. Is the only way of getting a replacement key, direct from Nissan? Why is it so astronomically expensive for a £4 piece of plastic? I've done a little reading and understand that the keys need programming with a rolling NATS code that comes from the Nissan database but there must be 3rd parties capable of cloning keys?

I flatly refuse to give Nissan the £180 they've requested for a single key even if it is hand-crafted from a unicorn's horn, it's extortion. grr

Some of you guys must have had replacements done? Anyone want to share the secrets?

If I remember correctly the dealer charge the key itself (+ cutting) at around £130 and £50 for programming the key (technical term is transponder).

You can try to get a used key (used remote but new blade) from ebay and book a visit to the dealer to program the key. That should be cheapest.

A locksmith in London (Muswell Hill) can do the key cloning. They charge £80 (key) + £30 (cutting) + £20 (getting the code from Nissan) + £50 (programming). (i.e. what I was told by their staff)

The last option is to buy a transponder programmer from the China and program the engine (ECU. each ECU can holds 4 different key codes) by yourself. If you have done that, actually you can start your own business.

I'm in the same situation as Dave.
Recently bought Micra 1.2 (2004) for my wife and it only has one key fob with built-in key (the car has keyless entry)
I bought this from e-bay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=220421163150

and read through this:
http://www.programyourkeys.com/Nissan_Micra_Key_Remote_Control_Fob_Transponder_Programming.html

hopefully in a couple of days time I'll get the key fob and try to reprogram the NATS.
I will say how things worked for me.
In the meantime I will check this thread for any other opinions.

That guide only applies to the remote door lock system, but not the Engine Immobiliser. The ways you can get your new key to work on your car are:
- bring the key to the dealer and let them program the key for you
- program the Engine ECU by third party programming tools

Nope, that NATS system is designed so that 3rd party companies can't just get around the immobiliser, if youi think about it a bloody good thing as you wouldn't want any tom **** or harry being able to get around your immobiliser.

The fobs themselves are not cheap to us as dealers so we have to pay a lot for them as well!

The new shape (square with two small button) fobs can not be re-used for another car so it does mean a new unit...

This is why I offer conversions to REMOVE nats (unfortunately not on the K12s - may be possible not tried..) so that people do not need to get new ecus/etc when nats goes wrong...

hi there if you have a k12 micra intel key or mechanical you will need to go to the dealer.
that is the square shape key

if you have the half moon key you can code into the central locking, if it for the engine it will have to be coded at dealers if you supply your own key and get a good locksmith to cut it you only need to pay for the reprogram. there are various types of chips so make sure you get the right one.

i dont recommend programming or removing nats via the ecu

Hi Guys, just purchased a secondhand K12 1.2 petrol Micra in Devon with only one key, the square type with two small buttons. I really want to get a spare, has anyone had any success getting a replacement that worked at a reasonable cost?

Thanks

Ian

Try the local locksmiths, many can read the key codes & reproduce it for less than half the prices Nissan dealers charge!

About £23 for my K11 keys.

Hi, all, just a quick update for your info. I have spent the day speaking to a few different folk with the following result.

http://www.keytomycar.co.uk/ Based in Barnstaple, quoted me £135 for a new fob and key cutting if I go up to Barnstaple.

https://www.devoncarkeys.co.uk/vehicle-locksmith-services-in-devon/nissan-car-keys Based in Exeter quoted me £160 for the same

Hamiltons Nissan Sidford Devon quoted me £250 for the same but did say that Nissan key prices have just reduced a bit and as it was Saturday he based his quote to me on the last one he did, rather than the current price. Basically told me he orders in a cut blade from Nissan (3 Days) then has the Fob units in stock, so it's about half hour labour to reprogram and test. Based on approx £95 for the fob £57 to program and the blade cost plus Vat.

At least that gives me a clue. Thanks for your help guys, will let you know which one I go for and if it works ok.

Ian

PS: Now my Engine management light has come on Aaaarrrgghh!!!!!! I feel a new thread coming on. Thank God for forums and decent knowledgeable folk.
