Removing air conditioning unit >> How?

I'm going to be removing the air-con from my K11 at some point over the next few months (poss september)

Just wanted to know if it was an easy job? What needs to be removed? and what needs to be relocated? (i.e alternator, anything else?)

i did this twice in one day on mine and richards you need a non aircon altornator braket for it to work :D then its just a case of taking it all off make sure you get it discraged before you start work and take the battery out!! oh and youll need a new non aircon fanbelt :D

is this the same for k12 you think?

why not just take the belt off it and put on a non aircon one and route the belt as if it dont have aircon?

rik, i would leave the aircon on, since you only get a decease in power when the clutch on the a/c pump kicks in and the pump is working, when its not kicked in its like having another idler pulley, also the weight of the a/c pump you could take away by removing the spare wheel

your exhaust manifold is on the back of the engine rik so if you went custom the a/c pump wont get in the way

yeah but it all adds up..i have removed the wheel allready and now im going to the next stage.

So which bits do I need to remove exactly? without sounding like an idiot!? I see the radiator grill at the front and the motor below the alternator.. is there anything else I need to remove?

all stuff atached to those lol

Yes, quite a bit actually!!! You'll need to block some holes off too.
Just poke your head right under the bonnet and it will make sence.

you dont need to block any holes i left half of it still in as i was in a rush all i removed was altornator, aircon pump, top aircon hose, the aircon pump braket, the altornator bracket and a hose that goes to the aircon rad.. then put the non aircon altornator braket on the altornator back on re-wired it up and its good to go and ready for a manifold... theres the rad left a hose from a condensor and a hose going to the car still left ill remove it at some point but its not hurting anything ATM

Nitesite...

For the aircon, you will have to remove...

(1) the condensor (radiator) at the front
(2) the other little radiator inside the car, which is used to cool the air
- to remove this you may need to get some 'standard' fan ducting from
the scrapyard, as the air con one will probably be a different shape
(3) The receiver-dryer (a long cylinder shaped thing, like 1/2 used toilet roll
in size
(4) The compressor, which will probably be near the alternator
(5) The pipework, which goes between the compressor, the receiver dryer,
and the two radiators.

* The refrigerant needs to be removed first * or you can get severe frostbite
requiring amputation, or come to harm by inhaling toxic fumes.

If I could find the time, I would be happy to help you remove the aircon stuff,
on a weekend day, if you still want to do so. You would need to get the
refrigerant removed 1st, by an aircon specialist. If there is a scrapyard
nearby, the replacement 'normal' parts could also be obtained as and when
they are needed during the removal.

**I would also be happy to have the parts, if you don't want it anymore, to
fit to my Micra! - as I'm not really that interested in performance**

As noted above, when switched off, it is only a weight increase, not a bhp
decrease, so you still need to decide whether to remove it!.

i know this thread was around before the dinosaurs but where do you go to get your aircon discharged? becuase next time i get bored im going to strip mine out

screwdriver + valve = job done

or undo a pipe pull it off the condensor and leave it

or rlees85 you can bring it over to me and i'll degas using the aircon machine free of charge, saturdays are a good day to bring it over

you want just the compressor, condensor and pipes removed? shouldnt take to long depending on how things come apart

only problem is this sat isnt mine in and the saturday afterwards is fast fest so i'll be at santa pod so you might need to wait a bit

has anyone taken there aircon out recently? I am desperate for a decent condition aircon rad.

caffer im doing mine very shortly soon as i figure out to discharge it. Fordy: does it matter which pipe i pull off to discharge it? tbh its luke warm anyway so i doubt much gas will come out.

ok i whacked first (big) hose off the compressor and nothing. no gas no nothing. so i whacked the second hose off too, and again, nothing. so that'd be why my aircon wasnt cold ;)

going to start stripping bits off the aircon system now anyway, so if anyone needs bits keep an eye on ebay (as i cant trade on here... ;);))
