Hi

i have found the problem with the ST the 3rd cylinder is cracked, no ones fault these things just happen :D

yep in a nutshell frank seems a bit strange to me how can this happen! surely the cast iron is more likely

i would guess the HG failed and pressurised the ally liner casing eh, probably why the (stronger cast) auto CG block is prefered on k11 turb,s)

i thought that the iron would crack on an overheat as aluminum would crack 2nd in my book? but thats just me

It has been known in other cars to over heat causing the cast liner to expand faster than the alloy block can expand causing it to crack....sorry to see this mate good luck

Since the gasket doesn't seal on that it does seem strange. I have 2-3 blocks though if you want to make me an offer on one.

i think i would build it into an MA12ERT
which is 1/3 more cc, then drop the boost by 1/3, for the same output but more reliability :)

Or you could do a steel lined MA12 oversized fully forged block with all the trimmings lol just like me, and plan to run as much boost as possible lolol....

ok i think i can get a new block from Ed, will also be making a head gasket to fit the block which should be better than a fig one!

I think this is going to be a slow winter project as im in no rush now as i dont fancy driving it in the ice and sleet, a nice warm dry garage will do perfectly.

I will update when i have made the head gasket, see if anyone else is interested?

Cheers everyone

Steve

That is really upsetting Steve. I sincerely hope you can get a solution sorted sometime soon. Personally I would probably get one of Ed's blocks and rebuiild it, trying to fix something like that could end up just being a waste of a lot of money.

So when do we get to see this rebuilt masterpiece, Ed?? I've been on these forums for over two years now and you've never had a running ST in that whole time... Surely you must be getting close now?? I would assume you've worked backwards when developing this so may I ask what end bhp figure you aimed for??

I like frank's style, do what he said. There was a guy in canada that built an MA12ERT and was getting 150bhp with no increase in boost...assuming headgasket was solid enough this would be a good way to go imo.

Think he said 250hp

this is strange, deffinately looks to me as its been cooked, disimilat metals expanding at 2 different rates (like a bi-metas strip, everyone heated a bi-metal strip in science at school) and its cracked the alu.

new block required im afraid

its a result of using an MA10/12 headgasket (which does,nt make full contact with the liner because its bigger) and running too much boost, imo :)
if the gasket was still ok, it would have still run ok (so it must have failed in that area ?)

I have everything sitting in my workshop except the liners, which ironically will be easy compared to everything else. I just have not had time to do anything with it. I don't think I have touched it for nearly a year. :wow:

As for BHP 250 as an absolute min. Even the CC gains alone should see that before improvements elsewhere. Gearbox concerns me however I used to strip syncros pretty quick with 200lb/ft torque and that's going to rise significantly.

However back to Steves car, I have a load of stuff Steve if you need anything. Just let me know.

Sounds promising, that will be a lot of fun once its all done!! Cant wait to see it all up and running again.

Just quickly in regards to the torque, will stock drive shafts be up for the job??

Well if I can do burn outs and stuff launches etc without breaking them, more power wont have a great deal of effect unless traction is greatly increased, it will just make it easier to break traction.

Oh the other problem I have had with doing this car is I have discovered how fun speedboats are lol...

Fair enough, that makes sense. It will probably be a bit touchy to drive until you get a good feel for it I imagine.

So when can we expect a twin charged canoo lol

Ordered a block from ED (thank you kindly)

will have the block and head faced up proper so they are both nice and flat. I have been looking at head gaskets and there's someone who makes the ST head gaskets from Bimetal which would be good, price is a bit steep though, another option is to use a copper head gasket, but probably would have to have the head and / or block 'o' ringed which would be a pain. Graphite is another option but dont know if the gasket would go again quickly.

Cheers

Steve

go bimetal for sure, and get both the head shaved and the block decked to be straight. No matter what it wil be cheap compared to rebuild, motor in and out, run in.

what price were you quoted for the gasket?

does anyone use head studs eg arp to hold the gasket in place tighter? its obviously a weakness

i got quoted £167 including delivery and its a ready made program for their machines with the correct dimensions (ran them all through and mine and theirs were both the same) so someone has had a gasket off them before??

Head bolts are fine they are not a weakness.

Ah they have the MA09 as I have ordered from them several times :p

170 sounds cheap for a quality metal gasket.

Ed thanks....I meant the headgasket sealing overall but if the head bolts are fine I won't worry about them :D

Ah brilliant! would you reccommend them atall and the gasket / quality?

i have also got quotes for bottom end / little end rebuilding and seals / main bearings etc which i think i might as well change while the cranks coming out

Cheers

Steve

Thats great you found someone that does a gasket man(Y)

couldnt believe it when i saw it in the catalog, thought it might have been Ed though ;)

Well the engine is in bits on the workbench in my garage for now, taking in the crank, rods and pistons and seeing what my local engine specialist can do (he was suprisingly enthusiastic with working on it considering they normally do rally and race engines) Then hopefuly the block will go in to be decked etc. Will be nice when its done, but now i need even more gasket paper for the bypass valve etc...

I think they will be fine. Im going to give one again. the only thing is the thickness. But you cant really do anything about that.
