Power Steering Electric Motor Fault

So my micra's power steering has recently failed on me. When i took it into a nissan dealers they found the problem was a electric fault in the electric motor that controls the power steering.
It a very expensive fix. Expensive enough that i cant afford it right now.
Has anyone els had this problem and found they have been had? Because it seems way too expensive for such a small problem :(

Thank you for that frank. Such a shame :( On a plus note i go into the army soon. So i can declare it off road until i can afford it to be fixed

After a 2 month battle with micra failing mot and nissan taking 2 months to locate and fit required part - I got in car today (day after car passed MoT) to find same problem. I contacted Nissan who told me this never happens and this light rarely comes on! Suggested they read the Internet! I am livid and have contacted watchdog tonight!

Nissan are such a rip off we ended up going to another garage, they fixed it for £700 instead of £1400 Nissan quoted and have given us a 2 year guarantee on the part instead of Nissans 1 year! If you live anywhere near Croydon I really recommend B&W Garage down Brighton road.

I have a Micra 2004, its PS light is on & the steering has gone very heavy. Reprogramming (costed £50) did not work & a new column would cost me ~ £2000. Wrote to Nissan regarding the problem they said that they have never heard the power steering failing!!!!! What a con...!!!!! I can see many instances of power steering failing on the forums & internet but its a great surprise that this has not been ever reported to Nissan. Cant believe it, bunch of lies...

I've just had the same problem, power steering light comes up, can't drive the car as too heavy to turn the wheel. I have repeatedly been advised by the power steering repair specialists, that they will not repair my vehicle as they are of the view that this range of Nissan cars has a manufacturing or design defect that is too fundamental for them to take on the task of repairing it. I've had a quote for a replacement part from Nissan for £2000 as well as from one local garage who said it is not worth replacing as it will likely happen again. So this is product completely unfit for its purpose. Car is only 9 years old with 60,000 mileage and is in great shape otherwise. When on the phone to Nissan I received rude customer service, and they had tried to avoid me too. They also said they had not had to recall any cars with my vin, and refused to log my issue. They chose to ignore that I said it was a common fault. They said if it was a manufacturing fault, it would have failed a long time ago...hmmm?
