Great work as ever Paul, I'm just glad I run rally cars where I don't have to worry about the state of the paintwork, as long as its one colour and it keeps the rust a bay thats all that counts. Scratches and marks, are all 'war wounds' of competition! :)

Looking great. I've just bought some BR RM coilovers and have to paint my front right wing. What sander are you using? Can't wait to try my new and improved Micra.
ooh, you got any pics of them? arent they with inverted monotubes?

it's just a cheapo £30 screwfix random orbital sander I'm using with 180 grit discs to flatten the bulk of the bodyfiller and then finish it off with 400grit wet sanding

it would be convenient if I could just paint it flat matte black but I've grown fond of her unique colour ?

painting & lacquering the drivers door and the rear passenger door went well

holding down the rattle can nozzle for ages to paint & lacquer each huge surface really really strains the fingers ??

IMG_20210629_235855.jpg
IMG_20210629_235558.jpg

the rear drivers door had a slight disaster, I sprayed too much on which resulted in an ugly rippling paint run & slight crack & pin holes ?
can't laquer over this obvious eye sore ?

IMG_20210629_214042.jpg
IMG_20210629_214507.jpg

so I wet sanded the area down with 1200 and resprayed it. I think I got away with it ?
gonna lacquer it tomorrow

lacquered the rear offside door, fitted the doors & fuel cap into the car and yess! it looks soo much better
damn proud of that after 4 weeks of hard work

all the same colour & glossy finish, and will likely need a good 2500 grit wet sand to get rid of the fine orange peel

IMG_20210630_211606.jpg
IMG_20210630_212009.jpg

next task is to mask, sand & paint the A pillar / roof matte black

the rest of the car really needs a good wash & buff from all this dust

IMG_20210701_213523.jpg

reassembled all doors & front end

IMG_20210702_222822.jpg

the bonnet was full of half polished orange peel so I wet sanded every little dimple off with 2500 grit

IMG_20210703_152058.jpg

began buffing with G3 compound followed by autoglym super resin

IMG_20210703_162013.jpg

inside the garage I could still see tons of deep scratches left by the 2500 but soon as I look at it outside, the sky hides all the tiny defects ?

IMG_20210703_172443.jpg

hoovered the interior

IMG_20210703_174329.jpg

wiped the engine bay

7am we all gathered at MaccyD in Aycliffe to convoy up to Carlisle by 9am

even spotted 2 other K11's ?
this was actually graffiti rattle canned satin black and looks good (something I almost would've done out of anger if I didn't solve that cracking paint issue ?)

occasionally there were a few very dark heavy storm clouds heading over and dumping a huge sudden wall of shower over the whole show for a few minutes, everyone running for cover ?⛈️☔

at 3pm ppl had enough of the poor weather and simply clogged the exits lol

driving back home through the monsoon flooded roads was interesting ?

after work I began to wash, mask off and sand the front wing with 2500

IMG_20210708_185433.jpg

some bits I went too deep and briefly sanded the base coat/primer ?
polished it with G3 compound followed by autoglym super resin.
you can see just how glossy, smooth, shiny it is compared to the rough door panels ??
but the shine also highlights all the dents on the panel & bad base coat underneath ?

can't wait to do the other panels another day

with soo many empty rattle cans to bin, I've always wondered what's inside em so I cut em open ?

IMG_20210708_212027.jpg

halfords grey primer uses a single 12mm glass marble,

IMG_20210708_212048.jpg

the clear lacquer uses none,

IMG_20210708_212104.jpg

and the paint shop base coat cans use two marbles

drove 6hrs round trip to birmingham to finally meet Stefan Navo, have a gr8 chat, went for a ride in kassandra and he kindly donated a few good spares I was after,
including a good head (my spare head was badly pitted),
nissen auto radiator (mine was previously leaking and the fins are all bent now),
reconditioned 1.3l gearbox,
GTIR MAF,
arch liner (mine's battered & melted),
and extra 5hp stickers he designed ?

a m8 Daniel needed a meth injection kit fitted onto his audi TT.
the most logical place to fit the nozzle is this plastic pipe between the intercooler and TB but removing all the difficult clips & fasteners was a PITA

IMG_20210711_120635.jpg

this was the only flat surface for screwing the BPST nozzle onto and clear the cooling fans

IMG_20210711_123041.jpg
IMG_20210711_133935.jpg

attached the solenoid to the airbox tray

IMG_20210711_164644.jpg

mounted the reservoir & pump in the boot

IMG_20210711_164659.jpg

the hardest part was figuring how to route the pipe & wiring neatly through the car.
there's no easy access gromet holes in the footwell or bulkhead,
routing past the door seals looks ugly and will crush the pipe/wires,
the engine loom goes up inside the scuttle panel & deep into the dash but the wiper arms are seized onto the spindles ?

took a lot longer than expected, as usual, so we'll have to wait another week to buy a wiper puller tool, wire it up & calibrate the pressure sensor ?

Got myself a cheap 1/2" impact wrench (Makita DTW285Z copy), 18v battery (came fully charged too) & fast charger (Makita DC18RC copy which amusingly plays the Mozart "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" tune ?) from ebay for just £65

View attachment 73347View attachment 73348

before using it, I wanted to check the internals and regrease em. removed this pointless plastic shroud ?

View attachment 73349

removed the impact mechanism cover, the spindle and impact hammer is bone dry ?

View attachment 73350View attachment 73351

dismantled the impact mechanism, quite a simple but interesting system. the planetary gears have just the bare minium of grease.

View attachment 73352

straight forward internal layout

View attachment 73353

sealed control board

View attachment 73354

yup thats a tiny brushless motor as advertised. I can see the cooling vent exits but there's barely enough cooling intakes at the front (may mod that someday).

View attachment 73355

the motor has it's own 2 bearings while this bigger bearing in the housing is for supporting the impact mechanism assembly.
kinda odd how the metal outer planetary gear locks to this white plastic housing which then locks to the outer casing (probably to keep the planet gear & bearings concentric?)

View attachment 73356

relubed it all fully with generic grease and CV grease. runs noticeably smoother & quieter

View attachment 73357

brought a pack of impact sockets for £12

View attachment 73345

imho this is mostly good for whizzing light duty or cracked-loose fasteners on/off quickly or shocking rusty fasteners,
but for high torque such as wheel nuts or suspension bolts, while it could eventually loosen em (be it slowly compared to a real Mikita), I'd still use a breaker bar to crack em loose 1st, whizz it off with the gun, then tighten em with torque wrench.

I brought it just to help speed up some of the boring processes (ie swapping wheels at trackdays) and wasn't meant to replace the breaker bar at such low cost.
proper impact toolsets that can replace the breaker bar costs well over £200 which I can't justify spending.

Well it took me way to long to find this post but I remember you mentioned the tune from the charger and I suspect that its a Makita unit.

Did you know you can change the tune?...

went to fill up and a drop of petrol hit the fresh paint and immediately melted/stained it FFS ???

IMG_20210720_174955.jpg

attempted to polish it out but nope the normal halfords lacquer definately ain't fuel resistant and has a deep chunk melted off it, easily feel the ridge ?

IMG_20210720_212947.jpg

I guess the next possible fix is to sand the area flat, respray it with petrol resistant lacquer, wet sand, polish again and pray ??

That blows, is a really impressive finish you've got with rattle cans, so top work hopefully some tougher clear coat will help. Might be a bit of a silly question, but given the number of cans you had to buy, would it not have been similarly priced to buy/rent a compressor and do it that way?

I'm quite happy with the overall result of the rattle cans.
yeah I'm gonna put a few more thicker layers of lacquer under the filler area to hopefully resist the solvent better.

costed a total of £280 to completely respray the whole car and all the empty cans are discarded without taking up any workshop space.

buying or renting all the compressor, air lines, spray gun, primer/base/lacquer, thinners, hardener, strainers & cups etc would probably cost well in excess of bout £400+ total and permenently take up ALL the remaining space of my tiny workshop.

yes it may give a better finish but this ain't a show car and the many drawbacks just doesn't suit my circumstances yet.

the door mirrors are looking very beatened & stonechipped over the yrs.

plus the drivers side mounting has an annoying loose shake cos repeatedly folding em in/out has worn the ball&groove mechanism till it can't lock in place solidly (so I'll need a need mirror)

the bumpers are the last things to respray.
this original rear bumper is now all battered, scarred & dented. the inside beam is also quite rusty and needs repairing but that's low priority.

test fitting a spare bumper before I paint it. looks much straighter than the old one with less defects

Yeah fair enough, can't complaint too much with a £300 respray! I CBA take my mirrors apart when I sprayed them, didn't get a great finish... I've probably got a spare unit knocking around if you need one?

Wouldn't worry too much about the bumper bar - I replaced mine with a couple of carriage bolts, weights a lot less and makes removal a bit easier too.

does the job ;)

I just brought a spare 1999 facelift drivers door mirror on ebay for £11

IMG_20210728_214238.jpg

although this later design is different, with the bare metal folding mechanism screwed to the all-plastic base plate (whereas on the preface, a metal frame & mechanism is riveted to the plastic outer housings) and it only folds forward whereas the preface can fold forward & backwards

IMG_20210728_214254.jpg
IMG_20210728_214327.jpg

it's a bit more flimsy so I dunno if I'll use it.
oddly after painting & assembling these mirrors, the drivers mirror no longer shakes as much? so I guess there's no need to replace it anymore (y)

didn't like the rear speaker enclosure I made, which was heavy, bulky & didn't improve the speakers anyway.

Vibe Edge EDB10A Powered Subwoofer

Just before JAE I decided that after 15yrs of flat tinny 6.5" speakers it was time to get a dedicated sub for the low freq and won't have to push the smaller speakers towards distortion.

the Sony headunit outputs a peak of 55w x 4 = 220w

I saw halfords was selling this Vibe Edge EDB10a for an affordable £79. has an integrated amp and puts out 250w RMS, 750w peak

IMG_20210811_210650.jpg
IMG_20210811_210732.jpg

it's a class AB amplifier running bout 50% efficiency so it'll need at least a 10awg power cable.
I ordered some 10awg copper cable kit online but didn't turn up in time, so I quickly brought some cheaper halfords CCA cables along the way to JAE so I had something to do at the show and check it all worked :p

IMG_20210811_210758.jpg

after JAE, the 10awg copper OFC cable kit from halfords arrived

Car filled up with E10 for the 1st time, cruised down to Norwich with no issues and did a normal 48mpg.

6pm arrived at JAE, found our MSC stand at the far end of the field near the dodgems and after a 2yr lockdown it's soo nice to finally see james, chloe, alan, sebastian & ben there with the gazebo set up ?

surprisingly I'm the 1st micra to turn up?

IMG_20210812_184943.jpg

me, chloe & alan assembled the new BBQ whilst james & sebastian erected the new overhead perimeter lighting which is a brilliant new upgrade. plus an overhead lamp heater inside the gazebo was handy for the colder nights.
Harlen soon arrived in his R33 skyline followed by Faith in her Honda Del Sol ?

spotted this cracked headlight since JAE

IMG_20210824_180611.jpg

so I brought this brand new headlight off ebay for £45, even came with fresh oem bulbs & fasteners ?

old indicators are getting a bit hazy so I'll use the new ones

IMG_20210824_190834.jpg

you can definately see how the new drivers headlight has a sharp clear lense whereas the old passenger side has a hazy scattered beam where the light hits all the micro fractures within the glass from years of heat cycling
