PollyMobiles Rebuild

Modify E-Prance 1080p Dashcam

recently got myself this e-prance GS608 1080p dashcam from amazon that a friend had suggested.

eprance.jpg

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FKTQ3NE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

records upto hi-def 1080p but found afew issues.

1st is the flimsy weak mount which allows it to shake all over in my car. the higher spec models have a sturdier adhesive short mounting block to reduce shaking but imo the mounting point is poor.
2nd is the awful non-existing audio. even in my subtly loud cabin I barely hear the road noise in the clip.
3rd is the massive raw AVI file. my spare 4gb microsd barely handles 20min so I'll either get a 32gb stick or just plug it my laptop as a webcam n record in video edit software at the ideal format

1.jpg
2.jpg

here's the tiny mounting point

3.jpg

remove the cosmetic cover to reveal the screws

4.jpg

unscrew the cover

5.jpg

the ratcheting mount collar pops off

6.jpg

carefully split open the casing which is just clipped together and then disassemble the circuitry

7.jpg
8.jpg
9.jpg
10.jpg
11.jpg
12.jpg
13.jpg

to try improve the muffled sound I drilled the pinhole into a large 4mm hole the size of the mic itself. retested the sound and there's near no difference so I think its a software issue

14.jpg

to improve the shaking, rather than rely on the puny plastic collar mount and long thin suction cup arm, instead I'll support the whole camera body onto my sturdy metal suction cup.
so first I made this wooden adaptor on my pillar drill. the 4 outer holes for scrwing onto the existing screwhols on the case and the middle hole is for screwing onto the cam mount thread plus for accessing the camera power button.

15.jpg

drill some new screw holes in the casing

16.jpg

screw the adapter on

17.jpg

then screw the assembly onto my cam mount

18.jpg
19.jpg

and now it's much much stiffer and doesn't shake

ah ok, must've been looking at the pricey versions of gopro previously from £180+

got enough cams for now and the drift cam does the job I need.
any more and it'll end up like this lol

Haha, do it :p
Talk about viewing from every angle

The GoPro is good but expensive, if I'd of known you was in the market for a camera I'd of let you know :)

even better if I can figure out a way to capture & virtually recreate the entire 3D scene inside & outside the car by fusing a bunch of 360 kinect/google project tango phones together.
so rather than just watching a fixed 360 view, you could instead interact with a virtual camera to view from ANY position & angle of that captured moment
tis pie in the sky idea but with the stuff I do at work anything is possible with enough time & resources.

aye gopro is a very expensive luxury and hi-def video/sound quality ain't exactly my top priority.
this dashcam was just testing the waters.

I fully expect to see this development soon :p
Just got it as a cheap cam that can stay dedicated to H701 and its ventures
just brought myself 2 pairs of Federal 595RS-R off ebay for £252 delivered :D handy for the next trackday at cadwell/blyton at end of Oct
Back on Advan AD08s for me ;)

have to be paid n sort my finance first before play time at work :D

heard good reviews of the AD08 and were my 2nd choice

I think you may have voided the warranty on that dash cam :p

I have a very basic one (claims HD ) it's not amazing but does the job, however both the cable for mine and mums have broken (but replaceable for about £2.50) and also the turning kn0b to tighten up the points of articulation in the mounting arm. Still works though and just £20+vat it is sufficient for recording eegits on my commute.

With regards to the 3d idea, perhaps Google will let you borrow a camera mount from one of their "street view" cars ;)

loadsa choices:cool: I'll keep eyes peeled when I need more

lol to hell with warranty and modify to improve ftw

ha that'd be some sight, a grey turbo micra blasting round a track with a great big massive cam dome strapped to the roof :D

yep. I'll see u at jae soon m8
Wont be there chap. Fallen behind by a day n a half on this week. And this week was the week I couldnt be behind.. GA swap, Nissanubaru back together, H701 apart and together again.. by friday night :/

Heard good things about these 595's so I'll be nosey'in about

The 595rsr's perform well but keep an eye on them as I've heard of a few that start to delaminate after a few heat cycles

The only lighter tyre is an Avon CR500 but they're really designed for Caterhams and the like, not sure how they would fair on a heavier car with such a light carcass.

The 595RSR overall seems a good tyre from most reviews. The people who seem to complain are those who appear to be used to bigger budget semi-slick tyres and, in my opinion, have got used to how a tyre of that nature behaves and are perhaps expecting a tyre to do something it simply cannot.

For the money they're worth the punt and on a K11, which is fairly light, should be good as long as you can get the temperature in them.

Been running cr500's on the micra for a little while, very nice.
Nothing to worry about on the tyre from what I can see even after a fairly gravelly rally :)
Very slow to step out on the rear too. Very controllable tyre

been a hectic month with JAE, relationships and work but once it calms down I'll update here.

andy cos my MOT and trackday is due soon, when I pop over someday could ya help patch the floor, swap the new federal tyres and perhaps we could alter the mid-pipe to fit a secondary cat behind the existing central cat? don't suppose ur workshop or m8s have a gas analyser to confirm if the 2nd cat will work?

We can do all but the gas analyser.
Although I could ask my mot place if they wouldn't mind getting some readings for us.
If we can get it done prior to both it'd help depending on your time/funds to get down?

Just buy a good after market cat n replace stock cat?

Paul's used a few cats now Chris, doesn't appear to make any difference it seems...

We should have an MOT emissions thread or something. I constantly find it odd how some people have a really hard time passing. With all the turbo people mapped it should be a doddle.

Last MOT here was: Natural Idle: CO = 0.000%, Fast Idle: CO = 0.002%, HC = 77ppm

Lets get it welded this weekend Sat/Sun and fit the new tyres. my funds are now seriously on its last legs and what just happened tday doesn't help, which ain't good :(
lets forget bout trying to MOT the turbo cos its always a pita so to guarantee a pass, I'ma swap back to stock setup once again after the welding, pass MOT, then swap back to turbo for trackday.

Fine by me, we'll get some mot standard panels put on this time :)

JAE 2014

Set off on thursday 7am with lisa, arrived at 10:30 waiting in queue for ages to get in. while waiting I spotted tom n chloe allowed in from an opposite queue from the back of the pub, ey? how r they allowed to get in? found out later that they arrived n checked in alot earlier parked behind pub and were allowed to the park first.

slowly we got in, yay got to see chloes car and toms made it fine. was lisa's first time so introduced her to tom, chloe, anthony, joe and his fab caravan. we setup tents at the back of the 4 plot area.

IMG_0573.jpg

carrie, james n louise soon arrived in another different bigger car :p we all setup the gazebo.

IMAG1099.jpg
IMAG1100.jpg

more ppl arrived but sadly this year wasn't a great turnout on this massive plot. only mainly K11 but zero K10.
we signed in for the Knock Out event, first time I ever participate so will be interesting.

IMG_0575.jpg

was soon told to attend the dragonboat racing, ey? thought I was only doing karting but hey what the heck, we needed as many ppl to join.

1.jpg

climb onto the boat behind will n karl but I almost slipped on the wet boat floor which woulda been very bad. damn the boat is so unstable, worry we'll topple into the firthy water in my nice clothes :p
had afew rusty practices before showtime, and GO Puwerr, following karls pace, ah mann splashing all over soaking my arms n trousers but must paddle for the win :D
I peaked over and we were >THIS< close, just 1sec apart

4.jpg
5.jpg

gr8 team effort everyone :) think we came 2nd overall that round, later got knocked out but at least we beat our rival:D

2.jpg

and now the karting round on the evening:cool:

we observed the previous teams and noticed a mixture of success between the two karts. the yellow kart launches better but the red kart seem to have better top speed.
we theorised that yellow kart was dragging it's clutch (lady was always holding it steady) so reduced clutch engagement time.

me n will stepped on and guy commentating if I was there for business meeting or a carshow cos of the smart wear n called me some sort of victor

my secret plan was to preload the centrifugal clutch like how you drag launch an automatic turbo, hold brake with left foot whilst applying slight throttle to engage/drag the clutch so that the instant we GO, the clutch was already engaged n immediately launches, while the other driver has to wait for the engine/clutch to catch up.
and this worked every time:cool:

the 2nd plan was to utilise the friction of the inner rail to slow the other kart n jump ahead before the oval turn. didn't notice the irregular step n gap in the rail which cause the other kart to sorta "pit manouver" the back end of mine, quick countersteer sorted it, stick to the inside, but on return got told off n restarted :p:D called an innocent vicor cos I'm always smiling n innocent.

3.jpg

oopsy, play it clean this time. good launch, got ahead but messed up the pitstop with the silly belt buckle. twas alot of fun.

that night sirChris arrived and everyone was exstatic:D we were all so happy to see him. he took me out in his car and geez take about zero compromise tis brutal hehe. hard suspension n brakes, power was good, paddle clutchpack simply bites hard on/off so upshift was nice but twas his mental fast driving which was startling. I mean 60 through town and over 100 down the 50 roadwork motorway, I was more nervous of getting pulled over or my guilty side going erm, is this allowed?:p

next morning I was nominated to do the bungee run. was up against a mother, plan was to let her go first to get a gauge of where to aim for and then I go 1sec later to beat it. was a success but ended up with a bad friction burn on the elbow n the mothers son was crying, aww :p
we went back to car for first aid but missed my round n was knocked out, meh. overall a fab event.

at the stand it was traditional business as usual for me fixing cars :D
chloe had a cold start issue so did my usual routine removing the old waxstat - calibrate IACV - adjust timing & idle speed and she ran sweet as nut

IMAG1104.jpg

did the same checkup to toms while he was cleaning/waxing my car :)
then was trying to check enuo's timing of his GA16 conversion but seemed he forgot to fit the timing marker :p
then did summore checkups with few other members cars:D luved it

IMAG1105.jpg

andy then let me drive his electric waterpumped GA16 :D went for a drive with lisa and oh god this is luxury compared to mine:cool: soft ride is silky smooooth comfortable while the bigger GA16 has the low end grunt, tis a gr8 cruiser.
bonfire on saturday night holding onto lisa was spectacular and romantic
no revving but still an epic sight with hazards n horns n excitement n admiring the water beading off the waxed cars after the rain:D

IMAG1106.jpg

sunday we packed up, was a luvely sunshine and my car has never looked this clean lol, thx tom:)
didn't catch chris leaving but thx for a gr8 time.

IMAG1110.jpg

it's been a really epic show for me n lisa ;)

spotting tday an oil stained top near spark #1 was cos of a perished rubber seal, perhaps this could be part of the reason for little oil loss and burnt oil smell? so will need to replace the leads. asked in buy sell for a set

IMAG1253.jpg
IMAG1254.jpg
IMAG1256.jpg

the brake pedal also rattles alot annoyingly on motorway so tried tying the rivet to the pedal to reduce slack, didn't work so will also need to replace that too.

IMAG1257.jpg

and then as I got more oil from halfords, Kasandra threw another fit n reveal another weakspot by snapping her clutch cable as I was about to drive off back home. Oh FFS good thing this didn't happen on main road

IMAG1265.jpg

as you see the cheapo plastic outer cable end had sheered off under the heavy clutch. good thing I brought my tools in boot, time to improvise a get-home-fix

IMAG1267.jpg
IMAG1268.jpg

tried keeping the plastic outer end in place by afew zipties but simply slipped back after afew test runs

IMAG1269.jpg
IMAG1270.jpg

had to ask sister to grabbed some wire n tools from home and secure it abit better now but didn't position it far enough thus the biting point was far too low to barely work n the wire was slipping. but was getting dark so lets risk it.

IMAG1271.jpg

barely made it home with almost no clutch, had to try clutchless shifting through town :/
just as I arrived home, I ran outa clutch travel cos the wire had slipped too far but just pushed the car back into the garage.

OK car will now be grounded for afew days, replace the clutch cable with preferably a metal ended cable (posted request on buy sell), swap back to stock setup before going to andys to weld n swap tyres

Your welcome for the detail Paul it was actually nice cleaning a car I don't see everyday :)
Kasandra sure does shine up well!

sorted now.
went to partco to check the BluePrint one they got, yup tis all metal , £24

IMAG1272.jpg
IMAG1277.jpg

here's the pedal end

IMAG1278.jpg

removing the rubber seal, it's all metal inside, gr8 should prevent this all happening again

IMAG1281.jpg

cable made in japan by SBK

IMAG1282.jpg

the gearbox end, still gonna drill out n replace the weak rivet end

IMAG1284.jpg

got some manifold gaskets since I'm gonna be swapping back to stock exhaust but they gave two different sets.
one was the cheap graphite type

IMAG1273.jpg
IMAG1274.jpg

and the other is the really cheap nasty papery type which hardly holds against the boost

IMAG1275.jpg
IMAG1276.jpg

only gonna use em if the current metal mesh type falls apart

old cable vs new

IMAG1285.jpg
IMAG1286.jpg

fitted but all the rubber washers seem to be compressing too much when the big PP requires alot of throw therefore the bite point was extremely low at the floor. so I removed the rubber and was able to tighten the thumbscrew all the way up n raised the bite point just enough.

IMAG1287.jpg
IMAG1288.jpg

Anyone got ideas on how to remove the brake pedal off the bulkhead cos its really difficult to reach the LH nut using a spanner with the steering column & plastic shroud in the way.

clutch bite point was still too low so lets remove any rubber bits

imag1281-jpg.35146

replace with a solid spacer such as a big nut

IMAG1290.jpg

space it out a further few mm

IMAG1291.jpg

so now I can feel the clutch pedal travel past the springy crest of the PP. check the bite point tomorrow
