What on earth would give you that idea? I'm far from it, just given up fighting with technology and tiredness to type what I mean
 
It read cold... because it had fresh cold water in :p
Been thinking about that... but the K10 and 100nx share the same part number for the gauge sensor :)

think its that cabin heater matrix that's always ON and stealing heat away from the engine during cold starts and making warm up soo long.
perhaps test out plumbing a cutoff valve along the heater hose, close it off and see if that speeds up the warm up?

an idea to test the temp sensor. remove the sensor, dunk into boiled water while still connected and IGN on and monitor the thermometer vs gauge.
at bout 100C it should be towards red & 82C should be middle. if that's true then the gauge & sensor is working fine and the issue could be with the heater matrix mentioned.
if it reads 82C at the bottom of the gauge and 100C bout middle, the gauge and/or needle may need realigning/nudging up
 
I'm not concerned about warm up personally :) It was the cool down that was the issue... I near enough siezed it I got it that hot :p Nothing a good drive in cool air didnt solve.. and 3500rpm idle speed

I've got 3 or 4 sensors all stacked up to replace it if necessary, but it definitely got towards H from last JAE when I got from Peterborough to JAE on 1 litre of coolant :/

have you checked if the idle control valve is clean and moving freely? perhaps the extreme heat & old carbon could've seized it in shut position? was the carb rebuilt?
time to make sure that top hose doesn't slip off the rad and the rad fan blows through the rad before cadwell.
 
Carb was rebuilt before JAE last year, so all is well in there. I dont think its ever got that hot before in its life, nor designed for it.
New alloy bracket is sufficient told hold the pipe in place :) although I have got a new rad on its way
Fans are fine as is, its a case of dont leave them running while in motion. Dont want to reverse them, and no space behind the currect rad, but a little redesign of my cooling system shall, fingers crossed, be sorted by Saturday

I put it down to mega external air temperature coupled with start/stop hard driving continuously for half hour. It will be much easier on the engine on track :)
 
Don't cut the studs down fella.... Fit some open ended nuts. Then you can run whatever width you like....

fab idea, I'll grind the closed end off these wheel nuts.
shortening the studs ain't a problem, I'm not like fitting mega spacers. although what I will need to do when spacing the rotas is to have some extended spigot rings lathed. anyone with a lathe?

another on my todoo list is prob to enlarge the centre bores of these 2 sets of R888 bbs wheels with a router bit or if they can even be lathed cheaply to use on track and then throw/sell the wheels away

kept an eye on the oil levels everyday and after I tightened the loose front sump bolts on saturday, the oil loss has reduced from 1L/400m (long steep line) to 1L/700m (shallow line) :)

Laser realignment 2014-08-07

Realigning the wheels before cadwell park on saturday.
Levelled the platform, jacked up car, set tyres to 3bars.

The initial setup before correction is:
(rim-arch, tyre wall, camber, toe)
FR - 102mm, 66mm, -1.25deg, 0.37deg Out
RR - 100mm, 71mm, -1.0deg
RL - 103mm, 70mm, -0.75deg
FL - 101mm, 66mm, -1.25deg, 0.175deg Out

The rear axle was pointing to the left slightly and the RR camber is slightly more than the RL.
Adjusted the trailing arm to straighten the axle, cant alter the rear camber much.

Front wheels were seriously toed out and to the right, corrected and drives straight now. the left tyres are obviously worn more than the right so will continue drifting left till I get new tyres.

back from cadwell, saw some car porn and booked some tracktime with andy, something happened and imho I'm deeply embarrased.

good news, we and the car are intact, wasn't anything catastrophic and it was a very simple issue fixed in a flash back at the paddock.
bad news, it was ideal track condition but the failure happened just after the sight lap so haven't even open the taps yet for andy and so we both wasted a £20 track session :(.
by not being able to assess the simple issue on trackside for safety, and so the recovery truck had to tow us back to the pits through the boo'ing crowd with fruity remarks, it was painfully embarrasing :oops:
but staying positive, ignore the world, fix it and move on.

Followed andy over to cadwell park at 10am, wondered through the field to look at various stanced hondas, VW, escorts, cosworths, nobles, skylines and andys favourite sweet shop, the stickers booth :p
there was a pair of F2000 & old F1 racers goind round the track, luvly sound. had food at cafe.

went off venue office to book a track session at 3pm, £20 for driver, got own helmet, andy £10 passenger & £10 helmet hire.
moved my gear into andys boot, checked tyres and stiffen dampers.

waltzed through the shiny bits motorsport penthouse paddock for car porn.

was already 3pm, driver briefing at office, drove to paddock to wait and we begin the sighting lap

warmed up the car, track was hot n dry n grippy n nice. beemer in front pitted after sight lap. I followed the clio through mountain hill, was about to pass down the start finish, max power, rpm, boost, upshift then all of a sudden hear a starving PAS pump or crunching gear-like sound with a big loss of drive, zero power, rich AFR.
oh feck I hope its not the valve train. trying to see if I can nurse it back, nope no power, more throttle makes it worse, badly misfiring, barely makes it up the hill.
no marshalls to the RH field, looked to go to the marshal post on the top left field, all cars passed on, looks clear, c'mon please make it, thats it no more juice.
bugga didn't even get to take andy out for a single proper lap, a wasted session :(
cant check the car on track obviously.
left car while session resumes, we watch from the trackside. damn

session finished, had to wait for tow truck to pull us back.
my front towhook is only bolted at the sides, no bolt holes under the replaced crossmember so I was hoping it the truck wasn't gonna rip it off like hammonds mini cooper in the topgear India special lol

keep the rope tight by braking. but now the embarrasment starts as we pass the grand stands up to the paddock (just as bad, but worse, as being towed home by dad through home town last yr when the loose big ends almost grenaded the new engine), windows were slightly open, I could hear em boo-ing and slating its a friggin micra thats held up the session, sorry.

now it's bad enough that the micra is socially pre-conceived as a granny car but for kasandra to breakdown in such public event amongst nobles, porsches, hondas etc I feel embarrassed to be seen as a laugh to the crowd, feel I've let the micra scene down and although I always try to be positive n block the negative, the boo-ing upsets me and also upsets me I wasn't able to take andy around and wasted our money.

return back to the paddock inspection bay area, opened bonnet and BAHH friggin TB silicone elbow between the GTIR MAF and TB had popped off, so the metered turbo air simply escaped whilst the injectors still dumped the massive fuel in hence too rich and zero power n black smoke n oil smoke. I thought that mikalor clamp was tight, guess not:rolleyes:

reattached the pipe and yay she runs completely fine. bloody heck kasandra what r u like eho_O

ok so perhaps I embarrased myself n kasandra n lost track time BUT at least she's not damaged at all (except her ego) so she can still do trackdays another time and we're safe.

throughout life I found and believe that there's this conspiracy amongst computers/software & cars I operate that they are often socially shy/nervous o_O
in private moments between you n the machine with minimal observers, it works perfectly fine as expected.
but once its under public observation and you tell it to perform as practiced and show to ppl ur work, something/anything is bound to go wrong:rolleyes:

was tempted to just tighten all clamps and go back out at the last 5pm session to annoy the haters :D but thought not worth the bother nor money and rather just save up for a proper private trackday event at cadwell with andy n ross n collin

The bloke who unhooked the tow rope didn't even get back in the truck before the problem was fixed. People like those who called out silly remarks have no place in today's car scene. And are the exact reason I'm getting sick of it. Think of it this way, if their car was so great where was it on track? Answer they're either too embarrassed of their cars to begin with or they've made theirs simply unsuitable for the track. Either way towed or not you're above them and their idiocy

We had a good ol day out. And what we did get was good fun anyway
What you didn't see (as you were focused on driving) was all the people pointing, photographing & videoing the car even on the sighting lap so it must've left a good impression somewhere

Thinking about it we should of text the commentator and told him it was fixed already

I wouldn't take anything to heart about you little breakdown mate, iv had footage of me being laughed at hillclimbing for using a micra, even stupid comments in the pits whithall the usual "why would u bother just get a golf gti or a scooby!"

It's ur car to enjoy and this build threads a testament to that :)

yeah I think yesterdays emotions took the outsider social critisism and social acceptance stuff too personal (well shoulda closed the window tbh :p)
as you say andy, on-track at speed my focus is only on the driving, collision avoidance, marshalls and passengers well-being :cool:.
off-track when things go quiet, engine off, being towed back, u hear the crowds more and perhaps got too distracted by the negatives rather than focus on the positive points.

yeah skinner I think over the years of hearing ppls critisms against the micra and what society thinks ppl should do as a NORM instead, really doesn't apply to everyone and we learn to build up a thick skin of experience to block out the useless negativity and utilise the productive useful positive remarks that makes us stronger.
there's always a friggin social queue of lambs ahead trying to selfishly comply n compete but I choose to go my own lateral way, metaphorically.

Oh Rats andy, I was too busy with the mess at that point, totally forgot bout being able to txt the commentators. but tbh wouldn't make much of a difference to outcome.

the lancias aero surfaces certainly makes full use of the regulations boundary boxes. like whatever the reg limits were, lets stuff as many vanes, vents, wings and bodywork as we can in there to get the most out of it :D

I occasionally forget how far kasandras gone, heck I've lost track of the pages, but suppose gotta be grateful that she's still here and the support from everyone.

there'll be a next time for you two, on our next track quest where she will (eventually) become braver n stronger and work under full pelt while amongst other ppl / passengers
 
here's the culprit.
even after I retightened the clamp after the incident, with the bottom of the clamp was remounted flush with the bottom edge of the elbow, the vibration n slippery elbow had allowed the T-clamp to ride upwards and LOOK it's only clamping the top half of the TB opening, so really is no surprise why this bit failed yesterday.

As we've said. Don't worry about those who comment its only for the narrow minded as you haven't conformed to fads of the car "scene". I get plenty of grief for my stickers never mind the fact it's a micra

We're looking at another track day where we can have another go out :)
 
Polly, have you thought about converting from MAF to MAP? That way it would be more reliable in a "get me home" situation, since when you run speed density, you can blow all the couplers you want :)

hmm manifold air pressure running off the vacuum lines? haven't thought of that.
dunno how that would integrate with the current ECU/nistune.
whats the pro n cons vs MAF.

one of the problem with my setup is that the MAF is externally fitted so the weakest link is the soft flexible coupling between the GTIR MAF and the more solid inlet mani/TB and so is vulnerable to rupture, popping apart under pressure leading to sudden incorrect mixture and no power.
fitting a MAP to the solid mani sounds like a more robust method
 
In Nismotronic, you can select load source, and select the appropriate MAP, or make custom scalings for your own type of sensor.

I'm using a 30$ GM 3bar one from ebay. That will go all the way to 2bar boost! Can't beat that with a MAF setup.

Nismotronic daughterboards have a ADC breakout board, where you can teather in your own sensor. I've wired my wideband, MAP sensor and IAT-sensor into this breakout board, and can now program them to be used instead of the standard sensors.

Here I have the IAT sensor configured, also needed for a speed density tune (10$ ebay)

At this point of time MAP sensors are not supported. We suggest upgrading your ECU AFM to using single or dual Z32 AFMs (dual will require a Apexi AFC) which are the highest reading Nissan AFMs. Other users in the USA are running with Ford AFMs or putting the AFM in a larger tube to accept more load and recalibrate to suit.

Using a MAP sensor, requires some recoding of the factory ECU software and addition of an Air Intake Temperature sensor (and TPS sensors for older ECUs) for this to function properly.
Asch, if you ever want an engine management system similar to standalone performance, but with the price of a Nistune, look into Nismotronic :) Should be quite the upgrade from nistune

We can just plod up to the spot... have someone ready and waiting... car magically fixes itself and return to track :p lucky I grabbed my phone on my way out the car :D

tday investigate into why this TB elbow kept blowing off

Seems the lower end was cut too early, no straight sections. as a result the wide T-clamp naturally follows the tight inner radius of the curve so the outer end of the clamp rides upward till its tangent to the curve.

So what eventually happens is the clamp sits at an angle like this and only half of the TB lip is clamped onto.
These three short petruding tips prevent the hose from being pushed further down

Also notice that only half of the wide T-clamp was able to provide any clamping force. Coupled with the angled clamp this meant not alot of surface area was used to keep the pipe on against 10psi, it was inevitable to fail.

I cut & smooth the lips off allowing the elbow to be fully inserted and grip onto more surface area

Now the T-clamp can apply force across a bigger area

So filed the edge of the motor and bent in a section of the clamp

The clamp can be seated all the way down and squeeze the hose against the TB

With the clamp fully surrounding the mouth of the TB I can now just tighten it as hard as I dare without fear of crushing it so the higher clamping force is bound to ensure it won't slip off

Another cause would be this unrestrained pipe from the intercooler to the TB and you see where its been rubbing against the fusebox

cos the pipe/MAF assembly is only attached via the intercooler below and the TB above and unrestrained, it was allowed to swing about freely during all the bumps n accelerating.
This swinging and twisting at the TB elbow joint basically allowed the clamp to shuffle to its natural angled position away from the TB until at max stress there wasn't enough clamping force to keep it on.

Ziptied the pipe against the front panel to restrain its movement so now with the stronger TB coupling it should lower the chances of this happening again.

the screw in the punctured tyre is annoyingly leaking again

the screw head that was poking out and hitting the tarmac over many rpm had prob disturbed the PU adhesive till it leaks

tried this modified screw with no head but the air simply leaks past the threads

so grinded a woodscrew, leaving a bit of the head out to form a capping seal over the hole

screwed it all the way down below the tread so it doesn't get disturbed by the tarmac and the head seem to be sealing ok. we'll see tomorrow

Looking t how much tread is left, maybe just buy a new tyre?

not gonna fork out unnessecerily for a single new thick rubber which will upset the balanced tread depth across the 4 wheels and make the steering drift over more.
plenty of life left at 4mm.
8mm new, 1.5mm min, 6.5mm useable tread available so the tyres only down to 38%.
according to my tyre records I estimate theres bout 5k miles left

when the front right punctured tyre wears down enough, I may be able to fit a spare rotas from the trackday set of wheels with no puncture.
once I've got my moneys worth from these, then I'll change to 595rs-r

after tdays run to work, the tyre's maintaining same pressure and the oil consumption has also slowed down under normal driving
 
I'm gonna be fitting the new 595rs-r on my track set of wheels while these ones on my car at the mo with 4-5mm are the road set of wheels
 
This is odd. The oil level usually drops 5-10% each day I drive to work but these last few days after the cadwell incident, its been staying still?

Gonna keep a close eye on this.

That might have been that final push the engine needed? It had to work pretty hard :p

that was just a gentle sighting lap breeze last saturday and we didn't even begin to push it till the pipe blew before the first proper lap.

meh I'll see if the data changes over the days before I believe the leak has stopped.
