Overheating or not?

Hi Guys

Need help with a little problem

My Micra K11 has been running at normal temp for months but the other day decided to go up into the red (luckily i got it home after a mile or two - no water lost)
Checked oil for tell tale creamyness (none -so hope head is ok)
I am in the process of changing the thermostat now but I have noticed that when i switch the ignition on the temp guage goes up to half way (normal temp) when cold !!!

have you done anything to the gauges? i managed to move mine when changing the lights in them making the car read 30 MPH while stationary...

Also check the 1-pin coolant gauge sensors within spec and clean the contacts.
