Nissan Micra K10 from Mauritius

Hi everyone

I'm equatorlounge from Mauritius, software developer for 12 years now. I purchased my red K10 a month ago. Mechanics has always been my passion and here's my chance to put this to work, so obsessed to a point where I'm starting to work as a trainee car mechanic on weekends. 8 hours totalled so far !

Here are the major fixes my mechanic and I have worked on so far:
- fixed the radiator leak
- changed radiator nozzle
- changed water pump
- change part of gear equipment (flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate)
(previous owner tricked me on this, but too late now, doesnt matter)
- changed my 4 spark plugs (champion)
- general 'servicing' (gear lubricant, engine lubricant, oil filter)

we did some few 'generic' changes yet i can personally tell you there's a long way to go (the electric part is like 4 out of 10) and im pretty much excited about it. every day i take note of the progress (in one month, there has already been a great improvement) and important things to note in order to work on my next 'move'

for instance, when there are steep slopes to mount and even if ive changed both the spark plugs and the flywheel/clutch-disc/pressure-plate), the K-10 has a tendency to turn off and I have to drive on 2nd or 3rd gear when normally I should be driving at 80kph on 4th gear.

i wanted to know what i should do about this before i go enquire with my mechanic, who always tells me this: hey dont worry, your car is fine, it's perfect, you're too paranoid...

hope someone can help me out on this and understands my situation..

i apologise for the quality of my english..

Thanks anyone

Hi and welcome :)
Your English is better than mine :p
Anyway to business. A 4 speed gearbox is a longer ratio gearbox than its 5 speed cousin. So it may struggle on hills at low speed in 4th gear.
Its quite normal and nothing to worry about like your mechanic would tell you. Just remember that your engine is 20 years old maybe more :)

Thanks h701 for your positive response ;) in fact, karlj you are right ,ive seen it too but still i want the K10 to be perfecto; I want to start somewhere, probably the engine first... there are lots of things someone in the field of mechanics would say not to bother about but, to tell you the truth, car mechanics in Mauritius, most of them, think 'short term' and don't really bother about the well-being of the car; it's just their pockets they really care about  which means i want to be able to take care of the car myself, starting trainee first; by the end of the year, i want to be a full-fledged k10 mechanic doing 80% of all tasks in it.

i also got the haynes manual and the service manual but, to tell you the truth, if you dunno know anything about car mechanics yet, it doesn't really serve much help at start :D

take the radiator for example: it's a workshop specialised in radiators and, for 20 pounds:
  • cleaned the radiator
    • (used a long wire and took off all dirt, poured it all out with water pressure)
    • changed the nozzle (meaning the cap, i think)
    • re-installed it
    • took my money, said thanks, bubye
    • advised me not to use anti-freeze, just rain water
    • come back in 3 months and pay again
  • Now, the next day, i started smelling burnt oil and, a week later, whenever i take off the cap, i saw a dark-green viscous solution stuck on the cap; when i phoned and asked about it, the guy told me i get too worried and this has been going on for more than three weeks now;
  • the water inside is never clean; always a sort of dark green substance seems to have mixed with it
  • i got a can of dark coloured substance called abro, normally used to clean rust out of radiators and it's advised to pour it all in one go but still have not used it yet.
hope am not bugging anyone with my silly questions LOL; is everyone from uk on this site ?

I can't help with the radiator problem, though it sound like you cooling system needs a good clean out.

Most on here are from the u.k but we do have members from all over the e.u

And no you're not bugging us with silly questions we're here to help :)

Its what the msc is for.
You want drain the water yourself and refill it with your cleaning solution and your recommended coolant/antifreeze. They're all in one now. Check which bottle you get 'concentrated' or 'ready mixed'
Mine was green a few years ago its usually a copper based substance they've use thats aged.
I wouldn't use rain water it contains salts which breakdown metal faster
Have a go with regular water with your cleaning solution and coolant :)
After a good run. Then drain and refill with just water and coolant

hi many thanks for your reply all of you, i sincerely appreciate, for real.

karlj: when you say cooling system, do you mean the ventilation that's just behind the radiator ? otherwise, i dont see a cooling system in my K10

h701, thanks for your advice, i'll put your advice in practice soon (run water+coolant+cleaning-soln into radiator then drain all then refill with water and coolant) and cross-fingers for everything to turn out fine.

you think i should post this advice in a post / thread specialised in K10 radiators? i think what i'll do next is a good checklist of urgent tasks and regular maintenance tasks; you have an idea where i can start searching ?

thanks all you guys !

The Haynes manual you have has a thorough maintenance list for you to check.
Feel free to create a thread on the radiator issue. With plenty of pictures to show everything you use and any results

many thanks all of you, for real; i'll stop saying that much thanks i sound so cliché
should i keep on calling you h701, h701? ;)
making one thread on radiator, one coming up on gear too
oh u get i've got the haynes manual, 11 chapters to go if i ignore the chapter 7 on automatic transmission !
guess what, i called the mechanic taking care of my radiator, in fact, it's a workshop specialised in radiators (so it says)
the guy told me i'm nuts and my sources are not for real; but when i checked with the mechanic workshop i work at every saturday, the latter told me im not the first person experiencing this problem..
nevermind, i need to get the equipment for taking out the radiator and i'll get the pictures too (out of a samsung phone with 640by480res in-built camera lol, duh)

Everyone else calls me h701 so feel free.
Sounds to me like your radiator mechanics dont know a lot about radiators.
The haynes manual has a service guide at the front of the book
