New car? Advice please

Right, I'm thinking of getting a new car in the near future, and I know you guys are going to say "stick with a Micra", but I thought I'd ask anyway. :)

Right, what I want is.....

-small hatchback
-Japanese
-£5000 or less to buy
-bit quicker than my K11, doesn't have to be mega fast though
-preferably newer than my K11, would prefer less than 5 years old
-a few mod cons, leccy windows etc

So far I've only really considered a K12 or a Yaris. If it was a K12 I got, would have to be a "SE" trim level minimum, either 1.2, 1.4 or the 82psi diesel. If it was a Yaris, I think I'd only really consider the Tsport. Insurance isn't an issue at all, I'd just like to stay a bit practical, we already have the Skyline as an impractical car. I've considered getting a MK2 MR2 or a 200sx, even got a quote on an EvoIII the other day, but tbh they're probably a bit fuel thirsty for me - I only use about £15 worth of petrol each week. lol

My financial situation means that I have to get a loan to get a car (my choice, I want a new car). If I was to get a loan now, some of it would be used to pay off my credit card debt, as I couldn't afford to pay the credit card debt and the loan off each month (only £700, not thousands or anything). I keep thinking maybe I should wait until the credit card is paid off, then get a bigger loan to get a 160SR......are they worth spending an extra 2 or 3 thousand to get one? I'd have to wait until at least after Christmas to do this too.

Throw some ideas at me.....please!

Must be in members bit, cos I can't see it.

Just out of interest, I just got an insurance quote on a Honda NSX.....£731!!! Maybe I should get a hooooooge loan and get one of them, lol.

If your after a K12 SE and have to get a loan it would be worth popping into a main dealer, the larger the group the better finance rates you can get and they can also go over different monthly patterns to match what you want, ie can go 37, 38, 39 months etc instead of the standard 18, 24, 36 etc...

Depending on where you are in the country I can have a look what we can do for you, don't have any T-Sports in the group stock atm but plenty of Micra's...

My buddy works at a Nissan dealer in Exeter, so he's keeping an eye out for me. :) Can the main dealers beat an interest rate of around 6% that the banks are offering at the moment?

yes they can

i'd recommend summat like either a mazda MX 5, an old R32 (might even find a GTR for less than £5k....), Starlet GT?

you will strugle to find a well looked after one for that sort of money and if your buying a skyline its a must to buy a good one as parts a really expensive and can be hard to get hold of..

starlet gt or glanza v will be quicker, but won't be in the age your looking for.

the glanza's are suposed to be hard to get insured on..i know robbo can get cheap on a starlet gt but they wont touch him with a glanza

It's not the cost of the car that's the problem, it's the running costs really.....using optimax, taking it to a specialist for servicing (even though the K11 already goes to a Jap performance specialist for any work  ), and as you say, Rik, getting hold of parts. You can pick up a half decent standard 33 GTST or a ropey 32 GTR within my budget now, but as much as I'd love a Skyline, and would be happy to spend a bit more to get one, it's the running costs etc that put me off. I'm quite happy to be chauffeured in the R34 for now anyway.

It's the same with the Glanza - I'd always planned on getting one as my 2nd car, even before I passed my test, but I'd imagine that parts for them are even harder to get than for a Skyline. Plus, a lot of insurance companies don't seem to have them on their database.

I quite like the idea of a Civic actually, not one I'd considered tbh - I've looked on the Autotrader, and there are some 1.6 VTECs in my price range, have even seen a coupe of CTRs at around £7k, but I'm sure they'd have been ragged to hell at that sort of price.

after living with the t-sport for a few week, i think its a great car.

its very nice to drive, looks the part and you know it will last.

Every review i have read has been a good one, its not a hot hatch by any means, and if you want one the t-sport is not for you, but as a good little car thats fun to drive, i can't see you going wrong with a t-sport.

people ramble on about you could get this car, or this car, for that money, yes you could buy an old sports car, but will it last? will it cost you in parts? how much life will you get out of it?

i think if the latest generation of nippy small cars, the t-sport is the best, looks good, drives nice, relieable, loads of mod cons.
it has always done well on things like the jd power survey - won in 2002 and i think top three since.
my t-sport cost about 6k - 02 plate with 20000 miles in absolutely mint condition.

I don't want a really fast car, just something a bit nippy.

Exactly, everyone I know with an MR2 has a broken MR2.

Thanks for your input.
