My Project for the last year (Not an st)

Ordered these from Harvey Smith in January (well respected in the Subaru community) in the Uk yesterday. The gearbox starting to go and the turbo for the micra :wallbash)
Well its true what they say, you cant take it with you when your time comes :D

Harvey is going to wrap these for me,uppipe is done already, now I know I could save some cash and wrap them myself but after doing the standard headers its something I do not want to again :D
so Turbo is next and pray that the newly rebuilt box lasts bt:)
This is Simons que for silly questions........

ALL this work was done in Jan 2012

Then on March the 17th 2012 , I had the car on track and broke the gearbox. Some laugh though..........lol

The result

Well decided to strip down the box for a look, I actually sick because its actually easy to work on , I had the whole gearbox apart in a half hour, few pics

Well lads a crazy bit of work in the last few days (MARCH 2012), gearboxes and rear diffs out of both the Impreza and Celtic's leggy. Had a problem with rear drive shafts matching up so looked into more and was talking to a trader on Scooby net that has experience with rear diffs and transmissions in genral.
So basically the 98 sti has a 4.4 final drive and the Legacy a 4.1, plan was to fit the box and whole rear diff and shaft from the legacy. That clearly wasnt going to work as the shafts are slight longer and not as thick as the Impreza's.
To sort the Final drive and shaft problem the solution was to remove the leggy's rear diff ring gear (4.1) over to the Impreza's diff and fit the diff in the leggy's diff casing so the pinion match the ring gear. Thats all done now all I have to do is drop the diff into somewhere to set the backlash clearance so that the diff is not overly noisey, or wear prematurely.
He's a a few pics:

Impreza ring gear with 40:9 Stamped into it , divide 9 into 40 you get 4.44

Legacy Ring gear with 37:9 stamped into it, divide 9 into 37 you get 4.11

UPDATE 30/07/2012

Small update lads , the car has 232k kms on it and with a trip to the Nurburgring coming up I thought I'd over haul the brakes and some small modifications thanks to Harvey Smith's advice (subaru Specialist in the Uk in the business 14 years)

I have ordered Ebc yellow stuff pads for the front, 2pot fitting kit with 290mm rear discs and kevlar pads ( got the 2 pots off Celtic03, Cheers Ste )

I also ordered a seal kit for the front 4 pots ,Going to give it a go during the week.

And then after reading a thread about bleeding the brake system Harveys advice about deleting the brake bias valve which gives a more balanced 50/50 feel to the brakes. This was done by replacing it with some braided hose and 4 brake fittings , very easy to do , bought the bits in Murray motorsport .

After doing the modification I can say the car stops better ,you dont get that nose diving feelings under hard braking you get with most older cars.

Started reconditioning the 4 pot front calipers today

Well thats the project up to date .............. the engine now has just over 30,000 km on it and as mapped by Simon Rowe (Jolly Green Monster) . I have now had it dyno'd but bum dyno estimates 320-330hp with around 350lb/ft of torque. The headers and exhaust and VF48 turbo really opened it up.

I am going to the Nurburgring on the 6th of September until the 12th with the Irish Subaru drivers Club so I'll have some vids and pics hen I get back

cheers lads , any questions just ask

Baz

Just back from the "Green Hell" . Absolutely savage place to go for any petrol head. Car went well only the last day and the actual last lap, the power steering pump started to whine really bad and boiled the fluid out of the tank and had some smoke coming out from back of the car on the uphill section of the track doing probably 120mph so slowed down and took it easy and called it a day. There was 4 other subaru's with us and no casualties, all went really well , Weather was about 35 degrees every day so could not have asked for a better time to go.

Nice! Good times, love to go there, not sure if a Citroen berlingo van is the right choice of vehicle though :D

Thought I'd update this , Since last September , I have had some huge changes to the car, one being Full 2003 Sti 6 speed coversion , larger rear diff and brembo brakes all round.
Also took the engine out to make some changes to the sump and breather system for track driving, this also made it easier to do all the transmission work on my own with an engine crane.

return to sump catch can

Painted the new rear diff

New 6 speed clutch and flywheel

6 speed going in

Shifter

New diff going in

Reconed hub , new bearing and painted

All this work was completed back in March/April 2013 to get the car ready for another trip to the Nurburgring where we completed 9 laps without anything giving trouble.

This is our last lap of the trip which produced an 8.36 bridge to gantry lap time which i am very proud of
