Blog: Micra Rally Car build

Right a very quick update, i've got a hold of a 1.0 micra coil pack engine (auto block) with low miles, so that is going in the red micra ready for the www.richardburnsmemorialrally.co.uk on 15/16th August 2009! Tickets to come and watch are available on the site now if anyone is interested, another micra is also on the entry list.
Looking to have the bike carbs set up on the car ready for this rally, with dogbox and AP clutch fitted, and AP front discs.
Blue car is now fitted with a 1.0 engine ready to be hired out to do F1000 or Junior
F1000 and the white one is nearly finished too, both cars available to hire, might even get both to the test day this sunday, fingers crossed!
Photos to follow if we do make it to the test day.

Is this at Blyton?
That red one should fly!! Thought there were a few wrc stars out for the RB rally but cant see any on the entry list.:(

It is Blyton, I am hoping that the red one will fly.
The wrc stars will be published closer to the date to get people to come and watch. Last year the Subaru Rally team turned up with the WRC 1 car with Marko Martin driving. Not sure who is coming this year, ill try and find out.
Are you doing Blyton?

Did you manage to get the cars ready for last weekend?

Got the car ready, just couldnt get them to Blyton, a friend who was going to help tow a car up valve broke on his 4x4 so that was knackered.
Also Chris had been up 24hrs from Friday am to Saturday am making exhausts, and I had been up Friday to 5am saturday so both of us needed the rest Sunday.
I have seen some photos from Sunday it was a good day.

To anyone who would be interested in attending this event the website is here;

http://www.richardburnsmemorialrally.co.uk

Tickets are available for both days, its 15th & 16th August 2009

It is anticipated that up to 120 teams will enter this year and that the Estonian former World Rally star, Marko Martin, will defend his 2008 title. Other notable British Rally Champions Mark Higgins and Guy Wilks are also set to attend the event.

Celebrities from TV and Screen including Rupert Grint (Ronald Weasley from the Harry Potter Films), Neil Cole, World Rally commentator from Sky TV channel Dave, and Mike Brewer TV presenter will also attend over the weekend.

The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team "The Red Arrows" will perform a special Flypast on the Sunday 16th August. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will also be doing a Fly Past on the Sunday of the Event.

Tickets are already on sale for this fantastic event at http://www.richardburnsmemorialrally.co.uk/. Advance tickets cost £8. Tickets purchased on the gate will cost £10. A concessionary price of £5 is available for MOD pass holders with display of Service passes on the gate.

I have entered the red micra as its nearly finished now! photos soon.

Its in and running in my red micra, ready for the rally next weekend.
Just passed its MOT and had tracking done today, and then on the rollers end of the week, rally is Saturday if anyone wants to come and watch link is http://www.richardburnsmemorialrally.co.uk
I know that another micra is on the entry list and in our class we have 14 cars.
I've also fitted the perspex windows, cheers for that Frank.

On another point, our exhausts we ran a standard 1litre micra on the rollers last week, it was putting out 50bhp at the wheels, with our exhaust system on and that being the only change it went up to 58bhp at the wheels!

Ive got photos of the car and the build Ant's engine and the rest of the prep before the rally which I will pop on later.

Right ok, got round to uploading some video tonight and some pics too, I am going to run an "in car camera" at the weekend for the rally just so that you can all get to see the car too!

Here are the links to the two videos I took tonight of it, dogbox fitted, AP calipers and brakes, Ants new built engine, light fly wheel, running bike carbs and our own exhaust.

The pics are of the engine, the engine going in, the car with rebuilt rear, the AP set up on the front, our own exhaust, bike carb set up and how it looks now.
As I said the rally is on both days Saturday and Sunday, and the car is being set up on the rollers Thursday. I am seeded at car 87.

Hey mate, its going for a final set up on rollers Thursday, I drove it yesterday and it is so rapid and sounds amazing with the bike carbs on.

As I said I will be running with a camera in car at the weekend so you will see and hear the full effect of the micra doing a rally!

I love the clanging of the dogbox as it ticks over. And the AP brakes makes it stop like its hit a brick wall.

i knew painting those bits red would make all the difference. man it looks good. i cant wait to see/hear her at full chat with a dog box..

PS guys... all the part on the engine are genuine nissan parts purchased from matt humphris, i cannot big this guy up enough. anyone contemplating building / rebuilding a micra engine, speak to matt, he will show you the way.

good luck.

Sounds brilliant! Reminds me of the top btrda 1400 cars. What tyres are you running?
Good luck for the Burns should be a good event (Y)
Look forward to the in-car!

Hi mate, tyres will be a mixture of what I have, yokos, dunlop and michis. The last event I had three puntcures and this event last year the engine blew up! So all I want to do is finish this one.
The in car of the car on full chat will be great, and yes it does sound like the top btrda 1400 cars! going up against some of them in our class, I think 13 in class now and we have the lowest cc! (Y)

make sure you run this one in and it should last a good long time. theres new everything in there..lol

cant wait to hear this on full chat. would be good with some 272deg cams.

the engine should be making as much power as a brand new 1300cc engine on bike carbs and racing exhaust can do..lol there will be no oil blow-by in the cylinders, the compression should be excelent due to the refurbed and machined cylinder head. i would say its gonna probebly make around 110~~bhp at the flywheel. with racing cams probebly more.

Ant you are not far off the mark, just got the call from the setting up on the rollers, first run and this is with the carbs just put on the car no set up time 91bhp at the fly, with a little playing and adjustment the final bhp is 109bhp.
As you know this is a bog standard engine, if it was running things like racing cams, skimmed head, pistons, light crank etc I would say in the high 120bhp- 130bhp.
The power at the wheels is 87bhp, as we are using a dogbox so hopefully the car should be right in the mix!
I'm really please and cant wait for the rally at the weekend now! Going tomorrow evening to get signed in early. more news, photos and video to come after the weekend.

87FWHP where? What's the rpm and what's the effective powerband like? Any plots to show :)

Hi mate and everyone,

Here is a scan of one of the runs, by the end of the day it was about 10pm and we ran the car on race fuel and had another little tweek and it put out 112bhp at the fly and we ran up to the limiter which was 8000rpm. You can see the power band from the pictureas I said this is a print out from one of the first runs.

its not the engine..... a rad hose blew off and it over heated..... bruce in the other micra is my bosses so n.....small world hey... just spokke to peter and he is gutted as it was going well and they just got the fueling right near the end... so was probs pushing about 118 bhp before the hose went.....

Hi all, yes thats right the rad hose blew on stage 6, I know we got to 5th in class and 40th overall out of 15 cars in class and over 100 entrys, but on stage 6 other cars in our class had problems which meant we could have got up 3rd.

The rad hose came off when I was going flat out in 5th about 8000rpm and the temp just rocketed off the dial and we lost all power. Gutted as the car was going so well. It tunred a lot of heads and got a lot of people talking about it,

He is a photo before we started the rally, I did run an in car camera just need to download that and get it on here too.

Finally tonight I managed to get some in car video on the PC tonight.
Its the first stage start for about a minute, the jumps over to start of second stage and goes through to the merge where you go round and do it all again.
Towards the end you see me catch the NME sunny GTI and keep with it most of the way!

I will upload it tomorrow.

You are both correct,

the Revolution RFX are on the car. Compomotive holding the gazebo down and pictured earlier on.

The Revolutions are 13" and the Compomotive are 14".

Right here is some in car video that i have uploaded!
1st video is the start of stage two to the split / merge

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYx7WTXHjDA
